Racing Incident Report

CITI CENTRE was withdrawn on 15.6.04 on veterinary grounds (blood in trachea after track work) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter SALENTINO. Before being allowed to race again, CITI CENTRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SALENTINO was slow to begin. WHATABOB and MILITARY OPTION were a little slow to begin. In the early and middle stages, CHECK MATE proved very difficult to settle and after the 800 Metres was allowed to stride forward. Near the 1000 Metres, CAPABEL was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of CHECK MATE. For the first half of the race, SUCCESSIVE GAINS raced wide and without cover. Near the 200 Metres, SMART WIN was shifted to the inside of LASER GLORY to obtain clear running. Over about the last 100 Metres, WHATABOB had some difficulty obtaining clear running between SUPER CHARGE and PRECIOUS SWEETIE, then near the line was close to the heels of PRECIOUS SWEETIE and because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Apprentice M W Leung (MEMBERS GLORY) said in the early part of the Home Turn it became unbalanced in its action and he was concerned there might have been something amiss with the horse, therefore he did not ride it out in the Home Straight. MEMBERS GLORY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MEMBERS GLORY after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MEMBERS GLORY, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, MEMBERS GLORY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. D Whyte (PRINCE GOLF) was fined $2,000 for making a celebratory gesture prior to the winning post. In arriving at the decision to penalise D Whyte, the Stewards took into account SUCCESSIVE GAINS had made considerable ground over the concluding stages whilst PRINCE GOLF was not being ridden out when Jockey Whyte was making a celebratory gesture and the margin between the two horses at the end of the race was a head. SMART WIN, PRINCE GOLF and SUCCESSIVE GAINS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted CHECK MATE had sustained a laceration to the right hind hock.
