Racing Incident Report

LUCKY SUPERSTAR was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, TOUCH DOWN was steadied when crowded for room between PHOENIX FORTUNE and AURELIAN which was racing tight inside SIXTY SECONDS and shifted in after making contact with that horse. From the outside gate, GOLD FIELD was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position on the rail but near the rear. Near the 250 Metres, PHOENIX FORTUNE was steadied and shifted to the outside of the heels of NORTHERN ROSE. After the 200 Metres, TOUCH DOWN was steadied when momentarily crowded for room by GOLD FIELD which shifted out abruptly. Over the concluding stages, GOLD FIELD got its head on the side, hung out, shifted ground and came into contact with NORTHERN ROSE. Also over the concluding stages, SIXTY SECONDS shifted in and just prior to the winning post came into contact with HIGHLAND DAWN. Near the 50 Metres, PHOENIX FORTUNE was steadied away from the heels of NORTHERN ROSE. Right on the winning post, HIGHLAND DAWN and NORTHERN ROSE were crowded for room between GOLD FIELD which shifted out while continuing to hang and SIXTY SECONDS (Apprentice C K Tong) which shifted in. Whilst the Stewards accepted GOLD FIELD had a bearing on the crowding over the concluding stages, Apprentice Tong was nevertheless reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount. Mr L Ho, the trainer of AURELIAN, and the allocated trainer of Apprentice H W Lai who rode the horse, explained the riding instructions were to follow JUST VICTORY if possible, the anticipated leader in the race. Apprentice Lai confirmed the riding instructions, explained that approaching the first turn he was racing to the outside of JUST VICTORY and his mount was proving somewhat difficult to settle, he therefore let it stride forward in the hope that he would be able to cross JUST VICTORY in the lead and his mount would then settle. He said when he went forward, JUST VICTORY went forward with him, he was unable to cross that horse which resulted in AURELIAN over-racing. He said along the Back Straight he endeavoured to steady AURELIAN, however, he was not able to do so and because of the manner in which it had travelled, the horse gave ground from the 600 Metres. Mr Ho accepted that AURELIAN had proved somewhat difficult for Apprentice Lai to settle. Apprentice Lai was told in the opinion of the Stewards he should have made a greater effort to attempt to steady AURELIAN in the middle stages of the race. D Whyte (SUNRISE RAINBOW) explained because of the fast tempo of the race and the weight his mount was carrying, he had to ride along throughout the race to maintain his position and as a consequence the horse did not finish the race off. SUNRISE RAINBOW, SIXTY SECONDS and GOLD FIELD were sent for sampling.
