Racing Incident Report

ENORMOUS WAY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped CHEERFUL HEART. MR BEAUTIFUL was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was crowded for room between CHERISHED and SUNDAY DELIGHT. W M Lai (BARRACUDA) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that about 100 Metres after the start he failed to take sufficient measures to prevent his mount from shifting in when not clear of HAPPY HEROES, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case and having listened to submissions from W M Lai in relation to his personal circumstances on penalty, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty on this occasion was for W M Lai's licence to ride in races to be suspended for a period to expire on Wednesday 3 November 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of this suspension is deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Saturday 23 October 2004. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, MR BEAUTIFUL was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHERISHED. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, MAMOUSKA got its head up and shifted out when being checked away from the heels of HAPPY HEROES. When this happened, ENORMOUS WAY improved to the inside of MAMOUSKA which meant it was carried wider making the Home Turn. In the early part of the Straight, ENORMOUS WAY and LUCKY SUPERSTAR were carried wider by HAPPY HEROES. At the 250 Metres, SUNDAY DELIGHT was bumped by STEP FORWARD which shifted to the outside of CHEERFUL HEART into clear running. Near the 100 Metres, LUCKY SUPERSTAR was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of TRIUMPH which was giving ground. Just prior to the winning post, ENORMOUS WAY was steadied away from the heels of DEEP PURPLE. Y T Cheng (MAMOUSKA) said the intention had been to ride the horse in a forward position, however, when the gates opened his mount began awkwardly, then despite him pushing failed to muster speed as he had hoped, as a consequence raced much further back than was intended and was with the rear of the field. He said his mount did not appear to appreciate racing in this position and in the Straight when placed under pressure MAMOUSKA did not respond and failed to make ground. MAMOUSKA was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MAMOUSKA after the race did not show any significant findings. STEP FORWARD and BARRACUDA were sent for sampling.
