Racing Incident Report

SUNNY RIVIERA and NOBLE SILENCE were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SPARKLING STAR and DEVIL MOON were crowded for room between SPRINTER and NOBLE CRUSADER, both of which shifted ground. Near the 800 Metres, SPRINTER became unbalanced and blundered when crowded for room between CELESTIAL STEEL and DEVIL MOON which shifted out away from the heels of WEALTHY which at this time was steadied away from the heels of BEARCAT which got its head on the side, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of NOBLE CRUSADER. In the circumstances, no action was taken. SUNNY RIVIERA, which was following SPRINTER, was checked and shifted in to avoid that horse. In the middle stages, WEALTHY hung out. Over the concluding stages, SPARKLING STAR hung in. In the Straight, WYNDAM EASY hung in. When questioned, M Rodd (BEARCAT), which was today having its first start for a new stable, said he had been instructed to endeavour to get the horse to settle and travel comfortably underneath him. He said after beginning well BEARCAT travelled in a forward position, after the 1200 Metres NOBLE CRUSADER which was racing on his outside commenced to shift in, he therefore momentarily steadied his mount as he was of the opinion NOBLE CRUSADER would continue in. He said shortly after this NOBLE CRUSADER shifted back out and near the 1000 Metres he was again racing to the inside of that horse. He said approaching the 800 Metres NOBLE CRUSADER again commenced to shift in and he was of the opinion that he would be interfered with as that horse was not properly clear of him, he therefore steadied BEARCAT which enabled NOBLE CRUSADER to shift in in front of him. M Rodd was told whilst his explanation would be recorded, he should where circumstances permit do his utmost to hold his position. M Rodd further reported that after the 200 Metres BEARCAT commenced to make an abnormal breathing noise as it was giving ground. BEARCAT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, BEARCAT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said there were no significant findings. WEALTHY and NOBLE CRUSADER were sent for sampling. Following the race, it was noted SPRINTER had blood present at its right nostril. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said an endoscopic examination showed the horse's trachea to be clean and therefore the horse was deemed not to have bled.
