Racing Incident Report

Whilst parading prior to the race, RAINBOW DIAMOND shifted its left front plate. This plate was reset. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. After being boxed, ALL OUR WAY, which had been difficult to load, became fractious and reared. ALL OUR WAY was removed from its stall and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. Before being allowed to race again, ALL OUR WAY will have to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test. As the start was effected, COTTON BALL lunged forward and struck the front of its barrier, causing the gates of its stall to open fractionally ahead of the other gates. On jumping, BRAVERY LUCK was crowded for room between SUPER FIGHTER and JOY TRUMPS, both of which shifted ground. Also on jumping, ALL OUR WAY was bumped by ESPRIT D'OR which shifted in. MADE IN HONGKONG began awkwardly. Making the first turn, COTTON BALL, ROCKET WIN and SUPER FIGHTER raced tight. Also making the first turn, WINNING SMILE was steadied away from the heels of ONLY YOU which shifted in when just clear. In the early stages, BIG WINNER raced wide and without cover. Also in the early stages, when racing without cover, SUPER FIGHTER proved difficult to settle, after the 1300 Metres shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of COTTON BALL which at this time was being steadied to avoid the heels of ONLY YOU which steadied in front. BRAVERY LUCK and RAINBOW DIAMOND, which were following COTTON BALL, were checked in consequence. After the 1400 Metres, ROCKET WIN was checked when awkwardly placed between the heels of SUPER FIGHTER and COTTON BALL which at this time shifted out slightly. Over about the final 1200 Metres, ROCKET WIN raced wide and without cover. At the 600 Metres, JOY TRUMPS was momentarily steadied away from the heels of BRAVERY LUCK. At the 500 Metres, MADE IN HONGKONG was steadied when disappointed for running between WINNING SMILE and JOY TRUMPS which shifted out. On straightening, JOY TRUMPS was held up and unable to improve inside ROCKET WIN and behind BIG WINNER which was giving ground. When questioned regarding the performance of JOY TRUMPS, a last start winner, Y T Cheng, rider of the horse, said he had been instructed from a gate towards the outside to endeavour to save ground and to commence making his run from about the 800 Metres. HE said to avoid being caught unnecessarily wide making the first turn he allowed JOY TRUMPS to drift back to a rearward position. He said JOY TRUMPS travelled comfortably, after the 800 Metres when he hoped to commence making his run he had WINNING SMILE and MADE IN HONGKONG racing to his outside which prevented him from shifting out into clear running. He said because of this he was not able to improve his position when he wished, however, he rode along around the Home Turn but was forced to make his run between horses. He said JOY TRUMPS did not finish its race off as he had hoped. Mr Y O Wong, trainer of JOY TRUMPS, confirmed the instructions issued and said he accepted Y T Cheng's explanation for not making his run from after the 800 Metres and then continuing to race inside horses. He did say in his opinion JOY TRUMPS is a horse better suited making its run on the outside of horses as it did when it was successful last start. B Prebble (ONLY YOU), a last start winner, said because of the slow tempo in the early stages he was able to shift across and race outside SHINING DAY in the lead. He said this was slightly further forward than when the horse was successful last start, however, he obtained this position due to the pace. He said ONLY YOU travelled reasonably until about the 800 Metres when it commenced to hang out. He said after this ONLY YOU near the 600 Metres commenced to hang out badly and continued to do so for the remainder of the race. He said when COTTON BALL shifted across him when only just clear at the 200 Metres, ONLY YOU was a beaten horse and became badly unbalanced while continuing to hang. B Prebble did say when he had previously ridden ONLY YOU, it had not hung out. Mr A T Millard, trainer of ONLY YOU, said he was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. ONLY YOU was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of ONLY YOU after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of ONLY YOU was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, ONLY YOU will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SHINING DAY and COTTON BALL were sent for sampling.
