Racing Incident Report

JUST TOO GOOD was slow to begin and shortly afterwards got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of METRO LEADER. SPECTACULAR TIMES began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the outside gate of its stall, resulting in W M Lai, the horse's rider, becoming unbalanced. RED FIREBALL was slow to begin and was then ridden along vigorously to make up ground and near the 1400 Metres was steadied away from the heels of CAPABEL which shifted in. S Sanders (DEVON FLAIR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that at the 1400 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of METRO LEADER, causing that horse to be carried in and in turn caused crowding on its inside to JUST TOO GOOD which as a result shifted in across the rightful running of SPECTACULAR TIMES, causing that horse to be checked. In the circumstances of this case, S Sanders was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 12 January 2006 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 4 January 2006. In addition, S Sanders was fined $10,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, MILLENNIUM DAWN, which was proving difficult to settle, hung out. Also making the turn at the 800 Metres, CAPABEL was steadied away from the heels of BRAVE COMMANDER. At the 700 Metres, DEVON FLAIR got its head on the side, shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of DOLPHIN STAR. On straightening, CAPABEL, which had been unable to improve, was shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running. However, when unable to obtain running towards the outside of DOLPHIN STAR after the 400 Metres, CAPABEL was then shifted back in and attempted to improve into a narrow run on the inside of BRAVE COMMANDER. Near the 300 Metres, BRAVE COMMANDER shifted in momentarily, causing CAPABEL to be baulked for clear running. Then for some distance afterwards, CAPABEL was held up and unable to improve behind SHINING LIGHT and inside BRAVE COMMANDER. Because of this, CAPABEL was not properly tested. In the Straight, METRO LEADER hung out. Throughout the race, GLORIOUS LIGHT travelled wide and without cover. D Whyte (BRAVE COMMANDER) said the intention had been to lead on the horse as he had done in a recent barrier trial. He said today BRAVE COMMANDER did not show its usual pace and to have led in his opinion would have required him to make too much use of the horse. He said he therefore obtained a position behind the leaders. He said passing the 600 Metres when racing tight inside DOLPHIN STAR, BRAVE COMMANDER made contact with the running rail and at this time made an unusual breathing noise. He said because of this he looked to his inside on two occasions to ensure the horse had not injured itself. He said in the Straight BRAVE COMMANDER did not respond to his riding, near the 300 Metres hung in and then failed to finish the race off. He said after the 200 Metres BRAVE COMMANDER again made an abnormal breathing noise and because of this he did not ride the horse out as he normally would. Before being allowed to race again, BRAVE COMMANDER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BRAVE COMMANDER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of BRAVE COMMANDER after the race did not show any significant findings. GLORIOUS LIGHT and MILLENNIUM DAWN were sent for sampling.
