Racing Incident Report

STRAIGHT VICTORY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped WALKONTHEWILDSIDE. WISE LOVER, MY BROTHER, CARRIZO CREEK and CASH IN were slow to begin. Near the 1000 Metres, BLISS STAR was steadied away from the heels of ROYAL DECREE which itself was steadied away from the heels of KINGSTON WINNER. MY BROTHER made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly and hung out. Also making the turn at the 800 Metres, BLISS STAR was steadied away from the heels of ROYAL DECREE. On straightening, WINNING REWARD, which was endeavouring to shift out from behind LASER POWER, bumped with CALCANDO. At the 200 Metres, ROYAL DECREE, which was commencing to give ground, was momentarily steadied away from the heels of BLISS STAR which at this time shifted to the inside of KINGSTON WINNER which was giving ground. At the 100 Metres, KINGSTON WINNER, which was continuing to give ground, was steadied when awkwardly placed inside BRAVE KNIGHT which at this time was carried in by CALCANDO. Over the concluding stages, BLISS STAR hung out. Just prior to the winning post, LASER POWER and WINNING REWARD bumped. When questioned regarding the poor performance of CALCANDO, D Whyte was unable to offer an explanation. He said despite beginning from the outside barrier the horse travelled comfortably in the early stages in a position with cover behind the leaders. He said when GIGA SPIRITS went on after the 800 Metres to race outside the lead, CALCANDO was left racing in a three wide position without cover. He said in his opinion this was of little significance and shortly after the 600 Metres CALCANDO was under pressure and not responding to his riding. He said in the Straight when endeavouring to ride CALCANDO out, the horse hung in badly and did not respond. He said he continued to ride CALCANDO out to the line other than having to stop riding and straighten his mount to prevent causing interference after the 200 Metres. CALCANDO was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of CALCANDO after the race did not show any significant findings. As Mr A T Millard, trainer of CALCANDO, had left the course immediately following the race, the Stewards will afford him an opportunity of explaining the horse's poor performance prior to the first race of next Wednesday. WINNING REWARD and LASER POWER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 10 April 2006)
CALCANDO, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. CALCANDO was again examined by the Head of Veterinary Regulation & International Liaison at the stables of Trainer A T Millard yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be "tied up" in the hindquarters. Before being allowed to race again, CALCANDO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
