Racing Incident Report

CHAMPION LAD was withdrawn on 31.12.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHAMP DRAGON (M Odendaal). Before being allowed to race again, CHAMPION LAD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FAT DRAGON was slow to begin and was then checked when crowded for room between JOYFUL YEARS which shifted in and SAFETY FIRST which shifted out. Also at the start, MEDIC LEGION was checked severely when crowded for room between SAFETY FIRST and MULTIMIGHTY which on jumping shifted out abruptly. FANTASTIC GUY was slow to begin and then lost further ground when crowded for room between BARRACUDA and BUDDIES POWER, both of which shifted ground. Near the 1500 Metres, FAT DRAGON was steadied away from the heels of BUTTERFIELD. A Starke (SAFETY FIRST) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1500 Metres he improved his position on the inside of JOYFUL YEARS, as a result of which crowding was caused on his inside to MEDIC LEGION which was severely hampered. A Starke was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 15 January 2007 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Sunday 7 January 2007. In addition, A Starke was fined $20,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Passing the 1000 Metres, JOYFUL YEARS, which was hanging in badly, was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHAMP DRAGON which shifted in when barely clear. After this, JOYFUL YEARS continued to hang in. Prior to straightening, WORLD SERIES was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FANTASTIC GUY which itself was steadied when awkwardly placed while endeavouring to improve between MEDIC LEGION and FAT DRAGON. No action was taken. On straightening, SAFETY FIRST was carried wider by JOYFUL YEARS. For some distance after straightening, CHAMP DRAGON was steadied when held up and unable to improve close to the heels of BARRACUDA. For some distance after the 400 Metres, SILVERBIRD had difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 300 Metres was checked and shifted out when disappointed for running between BARRACUDA and CHAMP DRAGON which was carried in by JOYFUL YEARS which itself was carried in by SAFETY FIRST. A Strake was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. After the 200 Metres, BUTTERFIELD and SAFETY FIRST bumped when both horses shifted ground. At the 150 Metres, MEDIC LEGION was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between JOYFUL YEARS and FAT DRAGON, both of which shifted ground. No action was taken. Throughout the race, FOREVER RICHES and BARRACUDA travelled wide and without cover. MEDIC LEGION was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MEDIC LEGION after the race did not show any significant findings. MULTIMIGHTY, SAFETY FIRST and BUTTERFIELD were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported FANTASTIC GUY had sustained an abrasion to the right hind Achilles tendon.
