Racing Incident Report

When being loaded, SYLLABUS bumped its right shoulder on the back gates of its stall. SYLLABUS was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred whilst the Stewards considered whether BEST GIFT had had an unfair start. The evidence disclosed that as the gates opened BEST GIFT began awkwardly, got its head up and refused to stretch out. Shortly after this, Apprentice K L Chui, the rider of BEST GIFT, became unbalanced and was dislodged from the horse. In the circumstances, the Stewards considered BEST GIFT had not had an unfair start and therefore weighed-in was declared on the numbers as semaphored by the Judge. Before being permitted to race again, BEST GIFT will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. In addition, Mr P O'Sullivan, trainer of BEST GIFT, which had been ridden by an apprentice jockey for the first time today, was advised he is not permitted to declare an apprentice to ride BEST GIFT in a race without first obtaining the permission from the Stewards. M Nunes (ABLE ONE) explained he rode the horse in a rearward position as instructed. He said because of the slow early tempo ABLE ONE proved difficult to settle. He said in the Straight ABLE ONE hung in and proved difficult to ride which is not unusual for the horse. He said in his opinion the poor performance of ABLE ONE today was as a result of the horse not settling in a slowly run race. ABLE ONE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of ABLE ONE after the race did not show any significant findings. SIR ERNESTO and SYLLABUS were sent for sampling.
