Racing Incident Report
On jumping, METRO FLYER knuckled. FREE WAY, which was standing with its head turned to the left, was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, JOHNNY JUMP UP, which began awkwardly and shifted in, was steadied away from the heels of QUICK NEWS. When the gates opened, GALLANT HORSE bounded in the air, then in the early stages proved very difficult to settle, on a number of occasions got its head up, near the 1200 Metres was steadied away from the heels of PORTER RICKS, then shifted out and again was steadied away from the heels of JOYFUL WORLD. In the middle stages, GALLANT HORSE continued to prove very difficult to settle. Approaching the 1200 Metres, JOYFUL WORLD was bumped by QUICK NEWS which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SUPER MARKSMAN which was shifting in in an endeavour to find cover. At the 1200 Metres, PORTER RICKS and JOYFUL WORLD were crowded for room inside the heels of SUPER MARKSMAN. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, METRO FLYER hung out. Near the 700 Metres, PORTER RICKS was steadied away from the heels of SUPER MARKSMAN. Making the Home Turn, SUPER MARKSMAN hung out. On straightening, PORTER RICKS was bumped by METRO FLYER. For some distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, PORTER RICKS was unable to obtain clear running behind DOUCAI. After the 300 Metres, JOYFUL WORLD and HK ISLAND VICTORY were carried wider by GALLANT HORSE which shifted to the outside of QUICK NEWS to find clear running. The performance of SUNNY WIN, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, SUNNY WIN will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. C Williams (METRO FLYER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse behind the pace if possible and that he was to ensure he gave the horse a good warm up behind the barriers as it can be tardy at the start. He said METRO FLYER began well today from its inside gate and he was able to travel in front of midfield comfortably without applying any pressure to do so. He did say for the major part of the race METRO FLYER was inclined to hang out. Mr C Fownes, the trainer of METRO FLYER, confirmed the riding instructions issued and said they had been consistent with the horse's recent race starts. He did point out METRO FLYER was ridden around midfield last start, however, today appreciated being held up into the Home Straight as the horse only has a short finishing sprint. JOYFUL WORLD was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, JOYFUL WORLD was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse was lame in the left hind leg. Before being allowed to race again, JOYFUL WORLD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. QUICK NEWS, METRO FLYER and DOUCAI were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted SUPER MARKSMAN had sustained an injury to its left hind hoof.
