Racing Incident Report

SUCCESSIVE GAINS was withdrawn on 21.3.03 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter MOMENTUM (Y T Cheng). Before being permitted to race again, SUCCESSIVE GAINS will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. On jumping, GOLD FIELD and BULLISH LUCK bumped. MAGNIFIER was slow to begin. About the 1200 Metres, STRONG SCOTCH was crowded for room by GOLCONDA which got its head on the side and shifted in away from SUPREME RABBIT. At the 800 Metres, STRONG SCOTCH was crowded for room inside AMBITIOUS TYCOON which was tight inside DARWIN. COMMANDER CHARLIE, which was following, was steadied in consequence. Also at the 800 Metres, MOMENTUM was steadied away from the heels of DANAMITE. For some distance after straightening, AMBITIOUS TYCOON was held up and unable to obtain clear running. To obtain a clear run, AMBITIOUS TYCOON was steadied and shifted to the inside of CLASSIC MASTER near the 200 Metres. Y T Cheng (MOMENTUM) explained his mount began awkwardly, causing him to hit his left foot on the barrier. He said because of this his foot was painful and he was disadvantaged in riding his mount in the early stages, therefore MOMENTUM got further back than was intended. F Coetzee (SUPREME RABBIT) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse somewhere around midfield with cover. He said the horse began fairly, but then immediately gathered momentum, proved difficult to settle and raced itself into a forward position. He said after the 1400 Metres he was racing three wide and without cover outside GOLCONDA, so he elected to ride SUPREME RABBIT along in order to clear those runners and shift to the fence. Trainer A S Cruz confirmed the riding instructions issued to F Coetzee. He said recently the horse had been left too much to do and therefore the intention today was to have the horse ridden around midfield. Mr Cruz said if circumstances permit in future the instructions will be for SUPREME RABBIT to be ridden in midfield. L Dettori (GOLCONDA) said throughout the race the horse hung in badly and proved difficult for him to ride. He said after straightening GOLCONDA continued to hang in and near the 300 Metres he hit the horse with his whip forward of the shoulder in an attempt to straighten it up, however, it continued to hang and as he was of the opinion the horse may have bled, he did not ride it out as he normally would. GOLCONDA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of GOLCONDA after the race showed no significant findings. Before GOLCONDA will be permitted to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CLEMENT SUPREME and MAGNIFIER were sent for sampling.
