Racing Incident Report

While parading, SARAFAN shifted its left fore plate. The horse was removed from the Parade Ring, re-plated and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. As the gates opened, PAOLINI put its head down, then on jumping began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of SARAFAN. RIGHT APPROACH was slow to begin. After the 1700 Metres, ELEGANT FASHION was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of VISORHILL which in turn was racing tight inside LUCKY OWNERS. At the 1500 Metres, PAOLINI, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and shifted out away from the heels of SARAFAN. This caused AIN'T HERE to be carried wider. At the 400 Metres, PAOLINI, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running behind BLUE STITCH, was shifted in to go forward. Also at the 400 Metres, SCOTT'S VIEW became unbalanced and was shifted out to avoid the heels of TIBER which was giving ground. After the 200 Metres, BLUE STITCH was steadied when unable to maintain its position between RIGHT APPROACH which initially shifted in and SCOTT'S VIEW (K M Chin) which shifted out. When relieving the pressure that was being applied to BLUE STITCH on its inside, RIGHT APPROACH shifted out. This caused AIN'T HERE, which was racing outside RIGHT APPROACH, to steady when crowded for room between that horse and BULLISH LUCK. K M Chin was told to exercise more care. F Coetzee (LUCKY OWNERS) was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of the horse. He said he obtained a one out one back position in the run, however, at the 900 Metres he had to start niggling at LUCKY OWNERS to hold its position He said after the 600 Metres he shifted to the outside of TIBER as it became apparent to him that horse was not going to carry him forward into the race, then in the Straight the horse did not respond as it normally does. He said after the 300 Metres he momentarily steadied LUCKY OWNERS when it was crowded for room between ELEGANT FASHION and RIVER DANCER, however, this was of little significance. LUCKY OWNERS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of LUCKY OWNERS after the race did not show any significant findings. TIBER, which performed poorly, was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, TIBER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TIBER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. RIVER DANCER and ELEGANT FASHION were sent for sampling. The connections reported after returning to the stable that PAOLINI was lame in the right hind leg.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 26 April 2004)
LUCKY OWNERS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. LUCKY OWNERS was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time the horse was found to be lame in the right hind leg. Before being permitted to race again, LUCKY OWNERS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
