Racing Incident Report

PILLOW KING bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. MARS began awkwardly. On jumping, ISLAND SPIRIT bumped the outside gate of its stall and lost ground. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, MARS was checked when crowded for room inside SERIOUS PLAY which was carried in by LA MERVEILLE which got its head on the side and shifted ground after initially being carried in by ISLAND SPIRIT which shifted in slightly when being steadied away from the heels of MASTER DREAMER which shifted in when just clear. As there were a number of circumstances surrounding the incident, the Stewards did not believe it appropriate to take action against any one rider, however, all riders were advised to exercise care. O Doleuze (MARS) said after this incident his mount, which was racing at Happy Valley for the first time, was reluctant to stride out. MARS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MARS after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of MARS, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, MARS will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. At the 1300 Metres, TRIUMPH was steadied away from the heels of MASTER DREAMER which shifted in when barely clear. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, making the Home Turn and in the Straight, LA MERVEILLE hung in. At the 250 Metres, SUPER CHARGE was bumped and carried wider by HAPPY CRUSADER which when held up for clear running shifted to the outside of NAPA to go forward. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the view an incident had occurred just prior to the winning post which cast doubt on whether MASTER DREAMER should be declared the winner of the race. After viewing the available videos and after all members of the panel had expressed their opinion, the Stewards believed this was not an appropriate case in which they should exercise their powers under Rule 123. Accordingly weighed-in was semaphored confirming the Judge's placings. Just prior to the winning post, MASTER DREAMER shifted in and made contact with HAPPY CRUSADER. When questioned, Apprentice K T Yeung (FAIRPLAY) said he had been instructed if possible to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position. He said FAIRPLAY began only fairly and he rode along, however, the horse failed to show its usual speed, therefore passing the winning post on the first occasion he elected to come back behind runners and travelled further back than intended. He said after entering the Back Straight he shifted to a position on the rail behind SERIOUS PLAY, then when that horse shifted out near the 500 Metres, he rode along to improve on its inside. He said shortly after entering the Straight he shifted towards the inside of TRIUMPH, however, it became apparent to him that he would have difficulty obtaining a clear run, he therefore shifted back to the outside of TRIUMPH prior to the 200 Metres. He said he commenced riding FAIRPLAY along and the horse responded strongly, however, at the 100 Metres he was obliged to steady away from the heels of SUPER CHARGE which was giving ground. He said at this time he shifted out and FAIRPLAY continued to close the race off strongly in the run to the line. Apprentice Yeung was told his explanation would be recorded. MASTER DREAMER and HAPPY CRUSADER were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 25 May 2006)
MARS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. MARS was again examined by the Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P O'Sullivan this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left front leg. As previously advised, MARS will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
