Racing Incident Report

COTTON BALL began awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall and lost ground. SMACKO bounded in the air and lost ground. Apprentice H W Lai (BARRACUDA) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 1800 Metres he shifted his mount in when not clear of TACTIC KING, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. Apprentice Lai was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 30 October 2006 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 18 October 2006. Making the turn near the 1700 Metres, SOCRATES, which had been hard ridden to go forward, was shifted out to allow racing room for runners on its inside. When this happened, inconvenience was caused to ELEPHANT DANCE and ALL CHANCES which were carried wider. After this, ELEPHANT DANCE raced wide and without cover. After entering the Back Straight, ALL CHANCES was shifted out and allowed to stride forward to race outside the leader. Near the 1400 Metres, SMACKO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of COURAGEOUSHEART as the tempo of the race steadied. Making the Home Turn and in the Straight, ALL CHANCES hung out. For a considerable distance after straightening, MASTERY was held up and unable to obtain clear running. At the 150 Metres, Apprentice H W Lai had the whip knocked from his hand by the whip of B Prebble (TACTIC KING). When questioned, Apprentice C K Tong (SOCRATES) said after the 1400 Metres ALL CHANCES improved rather quickly on his outside to be one length in advance of him. He said at this time he allowed ALL CHANCES to shift in rather than riding his mount along to maintain his position outside the lead. He said when this happened SOCRATES dropped the bit. He said in the Straight SOCRATES then failed to finish the race off. Apprentice Tong accepted that in hindsight, given the racing characteristics of SOCRATES, it would have been better for him to maintain a position outside the lead. SOCRATES was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SOCRATES after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of SOCRATES, a last start winner, which finished at the rear, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SOCRATES will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. RED PEPPER and NASA PEARL were sent for sampling.
