Racing Incident Report

From the outside barrier, PACIFIC ALLIANCE was taken across behind runners. After the 1400 Metres, despite being ridden along, KA KA SMART failed to hold its position and drifted back. Passing the 800 Metres, HOLD HANDS, which was racing in the lead, got its head up and lost ground. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by E Saint-Martin, the rider of TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND, second placegetter, against MUTUAL FUN (D Whyte) being declared the winner alleging interference on the Home Turn. The evidence disclosed that prior to straightening TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND was inconvenienced by MUTUAL FUN which at this time shifted to the outside of MEDIC LEGION into clear running. The protest/objection was overruled as the Stewards could not be satisfied that had the interference received by TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND not occurred that horse would have finished in front of MUTUAL FUN, having in mind the manner in which both horses responded to riding in the early part of the Straight and over the concluding stages. Weighed-in was declared on the numbers as semaphored by the Judge. Subsequently D Whyte was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care when shifting ground. After the 200 Metres and again near the 100 Metres, BARRACUDA was steadied away from the heels of MIRACULOUS. Over the concluding stages, MUTUAL FUN and TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND raced tight due to both horses shifting ground. S Dye (HOLD HANDS), which was racing over 1600 Metres for the first time today, said initially it had been intended to have the horse ridden in a rearward position as is usual, however, after discussing the matter with the connections of HOLD HOLDS, it was decided that should the horse begin well over the increased distance in what was anticipated to be a moderately run race to have the horse ridden in a more forward position but with cover if possible. He said HOLD HANDS began well, he immediately took hold of the horse to allow the on-pace runners to progress forward of him in the hope of obtaining a position behind them, however, after the 1400 Metres it became apparent that he would be obliged to race wide and without cover, he therefore elected to allow HOLD HANDS to go forward and cross to the fence in the lead. He did say the manner in which HOLD HANDS finished the race off indicated the horse would be better suited ridden with cover. When questioned, Apprentice H W Lai (KING ACRYLIC) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in 2nd or 3rd position if possible with cover. He said KING ACRYLIC began well, travelled keenly in the early stages and once BARRACUDA crossed to the lead, he felt MIRACULOUS might shift to the fence behind that horse which would enable him to shift to a two wide position. He said however passing the 1200 Metres MIRACULOUS continued to race away from the rail, causing KING ACRYLIC to travel three wide. He said shortly after this HOLD HANDS improved on his outside and shifted in momentarily when not quite clear, causing him to be crowded for room. He said after this HOLD HANDS continued on to reach the lead which resulted in him travelling three wide and without cover. Apprentice Lai was told his explanation would be reported. MEDIC LEGION was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. KING ACRYLIC was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MEDIC LEGION and KING ACRYLIC after the race did not show any significant findings. MUTUAL FUN and TRIUMPHANT DIAMOND were sent for sampling.
