Racing Incident Report

DASHING WINNER came from the gates awkwardly, then in the early stages proved very difficult to settle and threw its head about. About the 500 Metres, RIVER CENTAINE hung out away from NATURAL WINNER and brushed with SUPER BLITZ which became unbalanced, shifted out abruptly and bumped GREENMORE, resulting in that horse becoming awkward on the hindquarters of GOOD RECORD. Mr S Woods, trainer of LUCKSWELL, said he had instructed W C Marwing to ride the horse in a position where it felt comfortable. Mr Woods said depending on the way the race was run, this may have been in the front, in the middle or further back. He said before the race he considered there would be little speed in today's race and it did not surprise him to see LUCKSWELL leading, however, he was emphatic in slightly different circumstances the horse could be placed very differently in its future races. W C Marwing said he had noticed in videos that LUCKSWELL was being ridden back and in today's race he anticipated NATURAL WINNER would lead and he would be able to find a position somewhere behind that horse. He said early on NATURAL WINNER was racing to his inside, when it did not go forward, he felt it was in the best interests of LUCKSWELL to allow his horse to run along in front. He pointed out today the way the race was run, he was able to be successful when riding LUCKSWELL this way, but in future he would anticipate the horse being ridden away from the front. The explanations submitted by Mr Woods and W C Marwing were accepted. R Quinn (IDOL) explained he had been instructed by the trainer to endeavour to get the horse relaxed. He did say he expected NATURAL WINNER would go forward and lead, when this did not happen, he found himself outside the stablemate LUCKSWELL and although IDOL was inclined to pull, he did feel the horse was starting to settle and had he gone forward and led, in his opinion it would have raced hard and bearing in mind the instructions he did not want this to happen, consequently he elected to race back from LUCKSWELL. F Coetzee (NATURAL WINNER) said he expected to be able to lead in today's race as he did think the other leader, IDOL, in its work and trials had been settling more than it had in the past. He said NATURAL WINNER came from the gates well, he gave the horse a push along in an endeavour to get it on the bit to go forward and lead, but NATURAL WINNER did not respond as he anticipated and he was reluctant to push for too long to get to the front. He said after he allowed LUCKSWELL to cross and lead the race, NATURAL WINNER travelled only fairly and running to the Home Turn started to give ground. He said he thought the horse was going to drop right out, but then in the Straight appeared to take up the bit and ran on. The Stewards accepted the explanations submitted by F Coetzee, however, he was told that for the horse to lose its position at a critical stage as it did had come under some notice. REBEL LEADER, LUCKSWELL and CARACOLER were sent for sampling.
