Racing Incident Report

After arriving in the saddling stalls, SAMMY'S FORTUNE had its right hind plate reset. SAMMY'S FORTUNE was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SIR LAGO was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, SURE GAIN, HAPPY HEROES and ALL FOR ONE were crowded for room between SUPER POWER and WONDER KID which on jumping got its head on the side and shifted in. In the early stages, despite being ridden along, DECENT FELLOW failed to muster, then after passing the winning post on the first occasion was taken back to a position with cover. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, ALL FOR ONE was steadied away from the heels of WONDER KID (D Whyte) which shifted in when not clear. D Whyte was reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Prior to straightening, SAMMY'S FORTUNE was steadied when awkwardly placed between SUPER POWER and DECENT FELLOW which shifted out to improve. When questioned regarding the poor performance of last start winner, SAMMY'S FORTUNE, B Doyle said from the outside barrier the intention was to have the horse ridden in a similar manner to last start. He said he rode SAMMY'S FORTUNE along in the early stages in an endeavour to obtain a position slightly forward of midfield, however, after passing the winning post on the first occasion was left racing four wide and without cover. He said because of this near the 1300 Metres he took SAMMY'S FORTUNE back to follow SUPER POWER in a position with cover and as a consequence travelled further back than intended. He said SAMMY'S FORTUNE travelled fairly in the run, when placed under pressure after straightening responded for about 100 Metres and then kept on only one-paced. He said in his opinion SAMMY'S FORTUNE might have felt the effects of a hard run last start. SAMMY'S FORTUNE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SAMMY'S FORTUNE after the race did not show any significant findings. When questioned regarding the poor performance of WONDER KID, D Whyte said he was able to lead as instructed. He said WONDER KID travelled satisfactorily in the run until passing the 500 Metres. He said after this point WONDER KID commenced to make an abnormal breathing noise. He said he placed WONDER KID under pressure after straightening, however, the horse did not respond to his riding and commenced to give ground approaching the 200 Metres. He said when giving ground WONDER KID felt uncomfortable in its action. WONDER KID was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WONDER KID after the race did not show any significant findings. In the circumstances, the performance of WONDER KID was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, WONDER KID will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NOBLE TWINS, SIR LAGO and DECENT FELLOW were sent for sampling.
