Racing Incident Report

On the way to the Start, D Dunn was dislodged from PRIME WITNESS. At no stage did the horse get loose. KENWOOD MELODY left the gates awkwardly, threw its head about, shifted out and made contact with the hindquarters of BILLION WIN. HANDBAG DRAGON made the Home Turn somewhat awkwardly and shifted out. Approaching the 200 Metres, MAN OF HONOUR was steadied when disappointed for running between PRIME WITNESS and BILLION WIN which momentarily shifted out. After the 200 Metres, the flap part of the whip being used by Apprentice K C Tsang (HANDBAG DRAGON) was momentarily entangled in his reins. In the run to the winning post, OUR CLASS shifted out. When asked about the disappointing performance of CHARMING CITY, S Dye said he had not been on the horse in recent weeks, but he noticed it had been working well and he knew before the race the trainer was confident of success. He added the form of CHARMING CITY suggested the horse would run well today. He said from a good gate he was able to take up a forward position and the horse travelled nicely until about the 600 Metres. He said shortly after this he shifted out when a run came inside HANDBAG DRAGON and on straightening anticipated CHARMING CITY would be right in the race, however, when put under full pressure the horse did not respond and over the concluding stages was very disappointing. He was unable to put forward any real reason for the run. D Dunn (PRIME WITNESS) said he had not been riding the horse in quite as much work in the lead up to today's race as he had done for its previous start. He did say the horse had its final gallop last Saturday when he was engaged at the Happy Valley trials. He said however he was aware the trainer anticipated PRIME WITNESS would run well today. He said the horse was not able to find the lead, was not comfortable between runners and over about the last 200 Metres dropped right out. He was of the view the poor run today could be attributed to the horse's reluctance to settle when amongst other runners. PRIME WITNESS and CHARMING CITY were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon examined CHARMING CITY. This examined included a bronchoscopy. This revealed a moderate amount of blood in the trachea of the horse.
