Racing Incident Report

ETERNAL FUN began awkwardly and got its head up. As the gates opened, ACME OF SURPRISE put its head down and was slow to begin. PERFECT GALLANT began awkwardly, causing A Delpech, its rider, to become unbalanced. WE'RE BUDDIES was slow to begin. Near the 1000 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT, which had been hanging out, became unbalanced and was checked away from the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES. Over the concluding stages, WATCHMAN was awkwardly placed outside MAMOUSKA and inside the heels of WE'RE BUDDIES, therefore was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. Throughout the race, ACME OF SURPRISE raced wide and without cover in a forward position. B Prebble (NIGHT HUNTER II) explained he had been instructed to try and ensure the horse began well, then have it where it was travelling comfortably in as forward a position as possible. He said NIGHT HUNTER II began only fairly, he rode it along in the early stages to obtain a position better than midfield where he allowed the horse to relax. He said making the turn after the 1200 Metres he was slightly crowded for room inside MAMOUSKA, then shortly afterwards he had to commence riding NIGHT HUNTER II along in an attempt to hold his position, however, the horse failed to do so, gave ground and finished tailed out. Mr T W Leung, the trainer of NIGHT HUNTER II, confirmed the riding instructions issued to B Prebble and said these were consistent with those that had been issued to T Mundry who rode the horse at its first start of the season. He said when resuming racing this season NIGHT HUNTER II began awkwardly and lost a significant amount of ground, therefore raced well back. He said he was disappointed with the performance of NIGHT HUNTER II that day, therefore he removed the blinkers and tongue tie from the horse's gear in the hope that this would improve the horse's performance. NIGHT HUNTER II was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. NIGHT HUNTER II was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to have signs of a pharyngeal collapse. The performance of NIGHT HUNTER II was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, NIGHT HUNTER II will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ELVIS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ELVIS after the race did not show any significant findings. WE'RE BUDDIES and MAMOUSKA were sent for sampling.
