Racing Incident Report

GOLDEN SUN was slow to begin. ROYAL ARMY began awkwardly. SING FAY FAY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped LEILATI. On jumping, SWISS LAD stumbled. After the 900 Metres, ROYAL ARMY, which was proving difficult to settle, was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of SAINT THOMAS. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred after the 400 Metres which cast doubt on whether GOLDEN SUN (Y T Cheng) should be declared 4th placegetter of the race. They decided the matter should be resolved at a protest/objection hearing. The Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion after the 400 Metres GOLDEN SUN shifted in when not clear of BEST LUCK, 6th placegetter, causing that horse to be disappointed for running, steadied and shifted out. Bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish, the Stewards were of the opinion that BEST LUCK would have finished in front of GOLDEN SUN had the interference which did take place not occurred. They therefore sustained the protest/objection and placed GOLDEN SUN immediately behind BEST LUCK. Accordingly the amended placings became 1st SWISS LAD, 2nd EXPECTATIONS, 3rd TRIUMPHANT UNICORN, 4th SAINT THOMAS, 5th BEST LUCK and 6th GOLDEN SUN. At a subsequent inquiry, Y T Cheng was severely reprimanded and told in future he would be expected to exercise more care. After the 200 Metres, EXPECTATIONS was shifted to the inside of TRIUMPHANT UNICORN to continue going forward. Approaching the 50 Metres, the whip of O Doleuze (TRIUMPHANT UNICORN) was knocked from his hand by the whip of F Coetzee (SWISS LAD). Just prior to the winning post, SNIPPEDYDOODA, which was giving ground, was tightened for room inside ROYAL ARMY. In the Straight, LEILATI hung out. Throughout the race, SNIPPEDYDOODA raced wide and without cover and making the Home Turn hung out badly. D Dunn (TIGER RIDGE) was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said TIGER RIDGE enjoyed a comfortable run throughout, however, after straightening failed to quicken as he anticipated. TIGER RIDGE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of TIGER RIDGE after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, D Whyte, the rider of SAINT THOMAS, reported to the Veterinary Officer that the horse was not striding out freely. SAINT THOMAS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A subsequent veterinary inspection of SAINT THOMAS revealed no apparent abnormality. Before being allowed to race again, SAINT THOMAS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SWISS LAD and EXPECTATIONS were sent for sampling.
