Racing Incident Report

REUNION was withdrawn on 13.4.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter CHATER POWER (M Nunes). Before being allowed to race again, REUNION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. On jumping, TOFFEE blundered. From a wide barrier, KINGIFLY was taken across behind runners in the early stages. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, LUCKY FRUIT was steadied away from the heels of GIGA SPIRITS. Also making the turn at the 800 Metres, ASIAN CITRUS was unable to maintain its position between GIGA SPIRITS and BULB TREASURE which hung out. After the 800 Metres, ASIAN CITRUS blundered when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BULB TREASURE. From the 400 Metres until near the 200 Metres, KINGIFLY was unable to obtain clear running. After the 400 Metres, TOFFEE was steadied and shifted out to obtain clear running. From the 300 Metres until after the 200 Metres, BULB TREASURE was held up and unable to improve when racing behind CHOICE AND CHANCE which at this stage was giving ground. After this, BULB TREASURE was shifted out, however, continued to have difficulty obtaining clear running for the remainder of the race. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of a view that an incident had occurred after the 200 Metres between CHATER POWER, 2nd placegetter, and LUCKY FRUIT, 4th placegetter, which cast doubt on whether CHATER POWER should be declared 2nd placegetter. They decided the matter should be resolved at a protest/objection hearing. The evidence disclosed that near the 100 Metres CHATER POWER shifted out abruptly when not clear of LUCKY FRUIT, causing that horse to be crowded for room, bump the hindquarters of HE CAN TANGO which had been laying in on its outside and be checked. As a result of contact being made on its hindquarters, HE CAN TANGO became unbalanced and shifted in. The Stewards were of the opinion had this incident not occurred, LUCKY FRUIT would have finished in front of CHATER POWER, therefore the protest/objection was sustained. Accordingly the Judge's placings were amended to 1st HE CAN TANGO; 2nd TOFFEE; 3rd LUCKY FRUIT and 4th CHATER POWER and weighed-in was semaphored. Bearing in mind the abruptness of the shift from CHATER POWER, no action was taken against M Nunes. At a subsequent inquiry, D Whyte, the rider of LUCKY FRUIT, explained he did not lodge a protest/objection as he was of the opinion HE CAN TANGO might have contributed to this incident. D Whyte was severely reprimanded and told a rider of his standing has a responsibility to protect the interest of the connections of horses which he rides and he should avail himself of the opportunity to view available video evidence to ascertain whether he has grounds to lodge a protest/objection where the circumstances warranted. Throughout the race, CLASSA SUPREME travelled wide and without cover and in the middle stages hung out. GIGA SPIRITS was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. CLASSA SUPREME and RAINBOW OASIS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GIGA SPIRITS, CLASSA SUPREME and RAINBOW OASIS after the race did not show any significant findings. HE CAN TANGO and TOFFEE were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported TOFFEE had spread its right front plate.
