Racing Incident Report

JUSTINIAN, Standby Declared Starter, was withdrawn on 22.6.07 by order of the Stewards (retired). FAST TRACK was withdrawn on 23.6.07 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GLORIOUS RHYTHM (S Dye). Before being allowed to race again, FAST TRACK will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHEEKY LAD, which was standing badly, was slow to begin. MILITARY OPTION began awkwardly. PRIDEOFTHEORIENT was slow to begin. In the early stages, LAMBRO and PEARL OF INDIA proved difficult to settle. After the 1200 Metres, TELECOM PERFECT was checked away from the heels of CHARMING MONKEYS after being carried out slightly by GALLANT WIN which shifted out. For a considerable distance approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, GALLANT WIN proved difficult to settle and on a number of occasions became unbalanced when close to the heels of GLORIOUS RHYTHM. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, CHEEKY LAD was steadied when crowded for room between BULB TREASURE and GLORIOUS RHYTHM which shifted in slightly. In the middle stages, CHARMING MONKEYS hung out badly and finished tailed out. The performance of CHARMING MONKEYS was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CHARMING MONKEYS will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, MILITARY OPTION had difficulty obtaining clear running. After the 200 Metres, PEARL OF INDIA, ROCKET POWER and CHEEKY LAD became unbalanced and were hampered when crowded for room inside LAMBRO which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in abruptly. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Shortly after this, LAMBRO was steadied away from the heels of CARE FREE PRINCE which shifted in. For the majority of the Home Straight, GLORIOUS RHYTHM was held up and unable to obtain clear running. Because of this, GLORIOUS RHYTHM was not properly tested. Throughout the race, NOT QUITE PERFECT travelled wide and without cover. The performances of TELECOM PERFECT and BULB TREASURE, which also tailed out, were considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, TELECOM PERFECT and BULB TREASURE will both have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (ROCKET POWER) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in the lead. He said ROCKET POWER was slow to begin and he immediately rode along to make up lost ground. He said in the early stages the pace of the race did not appear strong and he was concerned he would be left racing too far back in a moderately run race. He said because of this after the 1300 Metres he shifted ROCKET POWER out into clear running with the hope of enabling the horse to go forward and race in the lead. He said as he improved his position, PEARL OF INDIA which was proving difficult to settle and PRIDEOFTHEORIENT increased the tempo and as a result he travelled in a three wide position without cover outside the lead. He said to continue forward to cross to the lead would have required him to make too much use of ROCKET POWER. E Saint-Martin was told his explanation would be reported. When questioned regarding the poor performance of PEARL OF INDIA, F Coetzee said in the early stages he went forward and it soon became apparent that PRIDEOFTHEORIENT would hold the fence in the lead. He said he therefore elected to attempt to steady off PRIDEOFTHEORIENT to give his horse a comfortable run. He said when ROCKET POWER improved to race on his outside near the 1000 Metres, PEARL OF INDIA commenced to over-race. He said as a consequence of this PEARL OF INDIA did not relax and was not able to finish the race off. PEARL OF INDIA, NOT QUITE PERFECT and CHARMING MONKEYS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of PEARL OF INDIA, NOT QUITE PERFECT and CHARMING MONKEYS after the race did not show any significant findings. CHEEKY LAD, GALLANT WIN and CARE FREE PRINCE were sent for sampling. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on LAMBRO at the request of Trainer A T Millard. The Veterinary Officer reported this examination showed the horse had an epiglottic entrapment.
