Racing Incident Report

On the way to the Start, D Dunn was dislodged from HELENE EXPRESS. GOOD RECORD was slowly away. On jumping, GONLARGO shifted out abruptly. At the start, KEEN WINNER and TRILLION DELIGHT were crowded for room between KINDRED SPIRITS which shifted in and SURVEY GENERAL which on leaving the gates shifted out. In the early stages, CARACOLER, which was racing in a forward position and without cover, proved very difficult to settle and pulled. J Egan (SURVEY GENERAL) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that about the 800 Metres he shifted his mount out across the heels of NATURAL WINNER when not clear of KEEN WINNER. As a consequence of this, KEEN WINNER was crowded onto GOOD RECORD, lost it running and was checked. After the Stewards had deliberated on the penalty and taken full account of all the evidence and submissions put by J Egan, they decided the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Monday 22 October 2001 on which day he may resume race racing (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Wednesday. About the 400 Metres, HIGH SPIRITS shifted out, as a consequence of this, NATURAL WINNER was tightened onto SURVEY GENERAL and steadied. Near the winning post, MOMENTUM and SURVEY GENERAL brushed. When questioned, S Dye (MOMENTUM) said near the 800 Metres he was racing tight between GONLARGO and KEEN WINNER and following SURVEY GENERAL. He said about the 800 Metres when SURVEY GENERAL shifted out abruptly and caused KEEN WINNER to check, GONLARGO shifted away from the running rail to take up a position to the outside of NATURAL WINNER. As a consequence of this he said he had no alternative but to take hold of MOMENTUM and finished up in last place. He went on to say rounding the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight, MOMENTUM was travelling well, he was aware he should have been going forward, however, he said he was unable to do so as he was held up behind CARACOLER and inside HIGH SPIRITS until about the 200 Metres where he was able to shift to the inside of HIGH SPIRITS, find running and go forward. When asked about the improved performance of HELENE EXPRESS, Mr D A Hayes, trainer of the horse, was emphatic that the win today surprised him and those associated with the stable. He said the stable fancied the other two runners significantly more than HELENE EXPRESS. Mr Hayes said the horse in recent times had been very disappointing and because of this he changed a number of factors. He said he had changed the work pattern of the horse in that it had been doing much shorter work on the track and he had worked the horse this morning which was unusual. He said he had also changed the bedding in the stable of HELENE EXPRESS, had removed the blinkers and fitted a tongue tie. He also said HELENE EXPRESS had enjoyed a very good and lucky run in today's race. The explanations tendered by Mr Hayes were accepted. SURVEY GENERAL was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
