Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, it was noted GREAT KID had lost an upper tooth. The Veterinary Surgeon examined GREAT KID and he said in his opinion this did not seem to be affecting the horse in any way and was passed suitable to race. Also after arriving at the Start, it was reported that FOR YOUR EYES ONLY was showing some signs of stiffness in front. The horse was trotted up behind the gates and after the Veterinary Surgeon consulted with C Williams, it was decided FOR YOUR EYES ONLY was suitable to race. OWNERS' JOY left the gates awkwardly, because of this got well back. Rounding the Home Turn, SWAGGIE and CHAMPION SPEED bumped as SWAGGIE endeavoured to shift to the outside of ALLEGRO. Near the 200 Metres, SWAGGIE was steadied when inconvenienced between CHAMPION SPEED which was awkward just inside the hindquarters of OWNERS' JOY and ALLEGRO which was giving ground, became unbalanced and shifted out slightly. When questioned, E Legrix (CLASSA VICTORY) said in the past the horse has been ridden in a forward position and not closing the race off. He also said CLASSA VICTORY has over times been proving difficult to settle on the track. Recently CLASSA VICTORY has been worked by one of the stronger expatriate work riders and the horse has been settling much better. Because of this, it was decided to ride CLASSA VICTORY back, at its last run this was considered to be satisfactory. He was instructed by Mr L Ho, trainer of CLASSA VICTORY, to ride the horse quietly in the early stages today and leave his run until straightening. He said CLASSA VICTORY did leave the gates a little awkwardly, just after the start was crowded slightly for room, but in the circumstances of this race with this horse these incidents were of little or no significance. He said on straightening he was aware he was racing with the favourite and the manner in which CLASSA VICTORY was travelling, he anticipated it would go on and figure in the finish of the race. He said he had initially hoped to get to the outside, but was unable to do so, was then held up behind SWAGGIE which was shifting some ground. After the 400 Metres, a run did momentarily present itself between SHANGHAI FRIEND and SWAGGIE and CLASSA VICTORY was still travelling very well, but he could see up in front of him was ALLEGRO which was starting to give ground badly, he continued to be held up and was not able to put CLASSA VICTORY under any pressure at all. He said running did come for him after the 200 Metres where CLASSA VICTORY closed off very strongly and was clearly unlucky. Mr L Ho confirmed the instructions were to ride the horse quietly. He also confirmed CLASSA VICTORY has been difficult on the track, but has been settling better of recent times. He expressed complete satisfaction with the riding in the early and middle stages, but in the Straight was disappointed that CLASSA VICTORY was not able to be put under pressure much sooner than it was, however, after hearing the explanations submitted by E Legrix and seeing the available video films, he was prepared to accept the explanations put forward. The evidence submitted to the inquiry by Mr Ho was accepted. E Legrix was told his riding at vital stages had caused a lot of concern and whilst there were reasonable reasons for today's ride, in slightly different circumstances the ride could not have been an acceptable one. He was told a rider of his experience should ride in a way which leaves no room at all for query. The performance of ALLEGRO, which performed poorly, was considered unacceptable. Before the horse will be allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and must pass an official veterinary examination. ALLEGRO was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, the horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. He did say he was unable to perform an endoscopic examination. CHAMPION SPEED was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, CHAMPION SPEED was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. However, before CHAMPION SPEED can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. MARK OF EXCELLENCE and METRO TRAVELLER were sent for sampling. On pulling up, it was noted that STORM DASH had a nasal discharge. An endoscopic examination revealed the horse had a significant amount of mucus in the trachea. Before STORM DASH can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination.

CHAMPION SPEED
The horse was examined after racing yesterday. No significant findings were detected. However, when examined at the stable of Trainer P Chapple-Hyam today, the Senior Veterinary Officer said he noted the horse had sustained abrasions to both hind pasterns.
