Racing Incident Report

MASTERY and GOLDEN SPIRIT were slow to begin. FLYING SUCCESS was slow to begin, got its head up and lost ground. In the middle stages and particularly on the turns, KING OF FISH hung out. After the 600 Metres, SUNNY RIVIERA was crowded for room by SILVERBIRD which got its head on the side and shifted in away from SIXTY SECONDS. For some distance approaching and passing the 400 Metres, SUNNY RIVIERA continued to be awkwardly placed inside the heels of SILVERBIRD which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in away from MASTER YING. In the Straight, MASTER YING hung in and near the 200 Metres was steadied away from the heels of NOBLE BOY. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether KING OF FISH should be declared the winner of the race. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). D Dunn, the rider of THUNDER MAN, second placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against KING OF FISH (M Cahill) being declared the winner, alleging interference to his mount over the final 250 Metres. The Stewards considered that by shifting out under pressure and carrying THUNDER MAN from the running to which it was rightfully entitled, KING OF FISH had caused interference to THUNDER MAN. The Stewards, bearing in mind the margin between the two horses at the finish, formed the opinion that THUNDER MAN would have finished in front of KING OF FISH had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. Therefore the protest/objection was sustained. In sustaining the objection, the Stewards placed KING OF FISH immediately behind THUNDER MAN [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became THUNDER MAN 1st, KING OF FISH 2nd, MASTERY 3rd, and FLYING SUCCESS 4th. GOLDEN SPIRIT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of GOLDEN SPIRIT after the race did not show any significant findings. SILVERBIRD, KING OF FISH and THUNDER MAN were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted NOBLE BOY had lost its left front plate.
