Racing Incident Report

When being loaded, TORI TOP became jammed against a back gate of its stall. TORI TOP was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. WINNING WAYS was slow to begin. NO COMPROMISE began awkwardly and got its head up. BIEN BIEN HEART began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. On jumping, TORI TOP was bumped by LAZY BUDDIES which shifted out abruptly. After the 1800 Metres, TORI TOP, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of OPTIC CHIEF. Approaching and making the turn at the 800 Metres, FORTUNE LAD hung in. At the 800 Metres, BIEN BIEN HEART was momentarily crowded for room inside GLORIOUS VICTORY. At the 500 Metres, NO COMPROMISE was crowded for room between LUCKY BIRD and BIEN BIEN HEART which shifted out slightly. Shortly after straightening, NO COMPROMISE was steadied when again crowded for room between LUCKY BIRD and GLORIOUS VICTORY which shifted out after being bumped by BIEN BIEN HEART which in turn was taken out slightly by FORTUNE LAD. No action was taken. For some distance after the 400 Metres, TORI TOP was held up and unable to improve behind HAIL WINNER and inside OPTIC CHIEF. A Marcus (FRUITFUL TRIP) explained he had been instructed if the pace was not genuine to go forward. He said after the 1400 Metres he momentarily shifted in behind GLORIOUS VICTORY, however, when he did this GLORIOUS VICTORY commenced to steady in front of him. He said because of this he elected to shift out and improve around the field to race outside the leader as in his opinion because of the manner in which the race was being run FRUITFUL TRIP would not be able to sprint home when the tempo increased as in recent times the horse had shown itself to be somewhat one-paced. C Williams (WINNING WAYS) said prior to the race he was of the opinion the horse would handle today's wet track conditions and also the step-up to 2000 Metres. He said the intention was again to ride WINNING WAYS from the rear and if possible come through the field as he had done at the horse's last start. He said after the 700 Metres he elected to shift to the outside of LAZY BUDDIES and CYBER GULCH as in his opinion those horses were not going to take him forward into the race and by shifting out he then positioned himself behind BIEN BIEN HEART, the favourite. He said after straightening it became apparent to him that he would not be able to obtain runs through the field, he therefore shifted to the outside and immediately when he did this WINNING WAYS commenced to hang in badly, proved very difficult to ride and did not finish the race off. C Williams said in his opinion WINNING WAYS did not handle today's track conditions or the increase in distance. WINNING WAYS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of WINNING WAYS after the race did not reveal any significant findings. OPTIC CHIEF and BIEN BIEN HEART were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 10 November 2003)
WINNING WAYS, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. WINNING WAYS was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer T W Leung yesterday. He said at this time he noted the horse to be slightly lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, WINNING WAYS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
