Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, G Schofield, the rider of FOREVER CHARMING, reported to the Veterinary Surgeon that his horse worked in his opinion quite strongly during its preliminary. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. FOREVER CHARMING began awkwardly, shifted out, bumped the hindquarters of FLASH MAC and as a result lost ground. ARIGATO was slow to begin and then was further crowded for room between GOLDEN MILE and GIVE ME FIVE which shifted in abruptly. ARIGATO then proved difficult to settle in the early stages. CHOICE AND CHANCE was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of SMILEY WIN. After the 1000 Metres, LUCKY MASTER was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of BULLISH KID. Near the 900 Metres, SMILEY WIN was checked when crowded for room inside ARIGATO which got its head on the side and shifted in away from WIN FOR ABALONE (Apprentice H W Lai) after initially being carried in by that horse which shifted ground when not clear. While the Stewards accepted ARIGATO had contributed to this incident, they nevertheless reprimanded Apprentice Lai and advised him to exercise more care when shifting ground. Shortly after this incident, ARIGATO shifted out and caused some inconvenience to CHOICE AND CHANCE which as a result was steadied. Near the 300 Metres, FLASH MAC, which was commencing to give ground, was steadied when momentarily crowded for room between BULLISH KID which shifted in slightly and LUCKY MASTER which shifted to the outside of WIN FOR ABALONE to obtain clear running. GOLDEN MILE, which was following FLASH MAC, was steadied in consequence. Near the 200 Metres, ARIGATO was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of GIVE ME FIVE which was giving ground. ARIGATO was then awkwardly placed on the heels of CHOICE AND CHANCE for a short distance. After the 200 Metres, SMILEY WIN hung out. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the final 100 Metres which cast sufficient doubt on whether TAIJI SPIRIT should be declared the winner of the race. A Marcus, the rider of GREAT STAR, 2nd placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against TAIJI SPIRIT (D Dunn) being declared the winner alleging interference to his mount over the final 100 Metres. The Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion whilst TAIJI SPIRIT did shift in over the concluding stages and make contact with GREAT STAR, they did not consider, bearing in mind TAIJI SPIRIT had come from behind GREAT STAR, that GREAT STAR would have finished in front of TAIJI SPIRIT had the interference which did take place not occurred. Therefore the protest/objection was overruled and accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. Subsequently D Dunn was advised in similar circumstances he should stop riding and straighten his mount. FOREVER CHARMING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, FOREVER CHARMING was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. BULLISH KID, TAIJI SPIRIT and GREAT STAR were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported that GIVE ME FIVE had bled from both nostrils.
