Racing Incident Report

SCREAMING EAGLE was slow to begin. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, BUDDIES POWER was steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of MELOS (Apprentice M W Leung) which shifted in when not properly clear. BEAMING RIVER, which was following BUDDIES POWER, was checked and shifted out. Apprentice Leung was advised to exercise more care. In the early stages, WYNDAM PLENTY proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. In the middle stages, KING PALM proved difficult to settle. Prior to straightening, WYNDAM PLENTY, which was being steadied when held up on the heels of ESCALATION, was dragged down behind by SMILING FOREST (K S Yu) which was awkwardly placed close to its heels. K S Yu was asked to exercise care. In the Straight, SCREAMING EAGLE hung in and near the 100 Metres was steadied away from the heels of SMILING FOREST. Just prior to the winning post, BEAMING RIVER, which was hanging in, was steadied away from the heels of BUDDIES POWER which itself when giving ground was awkwardly placed close to the heels of AUSPICIOUS ODYSSEY and was steadied. Because of this, neither BEAMING RIVER nor BUDDIES POWER were ridden right out to the end of the race. When questioned about the reasons for WYNDAM PLENTY racing further back tonight than is usual, Trainer D A Hayes said previously when the horse was being ridden without cover, it had been difficult to settle and failed to finish its races off. He said at the horse's last start it had drawn barrier 2 and on that occasion was ridden with cover in front of midfield and had put in its best performance. He said tonight from gate 9 he was concerned if WYNDAM PLENTY was ridden to go forward in the early stages, it would not obtain cover, would again prove difficult to settle and not finish the race off, it was therefore decided to come out quietly on the horse and allow it to settle in a rearward position but to ensure that it had cover. He said when ridden in this manner WYNDAM PLENTY had tonight performed satisfactorily bearing in mind it had been galloped on prior to straightening. He said as WYNDAM PLENTY still managed to close the race off fairly, in future the riding instructions will be for WYNDAM PLENTY to have cover and if it draws favourably this may be in front of midfield, but from a wider gate this may require the horse to be behind midfield. F Coetzee (DREAMS COME TRUE) said from the wide barrier it had been hoped to obtain a position somewhere about midfield but with cover. He said because of this he came out of the barrier quietly on DREAMS COME TRUE, the horse got its head up and he immediately looked to his inside to find a position. He said however to obtain cover he had to come back and race near the rear. He said near the 800 Metres he considered riding along to hold the position on the back of ACE KING, however, KING PALM which at this time had been racing three wide was coming back and looking to shift in. He said he felt if he had ridden along at this time to race inside KING PALM, he might have been interfered with and DREAMS COME TRUE might have commenced to over-race. He said after this he was comfortable following KING PALM, then near the 500 Metres he considered shifting out to commence improving his position, however, at this time KING PALM shifted out to a three wide position behind BEAMING RIVER. He said he therefore remained racing behind KING PALM and steadied away from the heels of that runner prior to straightening. He said to have improved his position on the outside of KING PALM at this time would have in his opinion meant he was unnecessarily wide. He said in the Straight he shifted DREAMS COME TRUE to the outside and the horse closed off strongly. ESCALATION was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, ESCALATION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, ESCALATION will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BUDDIES POWER, KING PALM, THE WORLD OF LOVE and DREAMS COME TRUE were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 16 December 2004)
After the race, BUDDIES POWER was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the request of Trainer D J Hall. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus and some blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, BUDDIES POWER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
