Racing Incident Report

When the gates opened, MERIDIAN STAR threw its head up and consequently was slow to begin. SUMMERLAND was a little slow to begin and on jumping shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of GREAT DELIGHT. SMART WINNER began awkwardly. G Schofield (THE DUKE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 1200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of HIDDEN DRAGON, causing that horse to be carried in across the rightful running of ANABATIK which as a result was checked and in turn caused crowding on its inside to ALL THRILLS TOO. When ANABATIK checked, inconvenience was also caused to GEM OF INDIA and CAPE OF GOOD HOPE which were shifted out. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for G Schofield to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 19 January 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Sunday 4 January 2004. After this incident, HIDDEN DRAGON proved very difficult to settle when racing close to the heels of THE DUKE. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, THE DUKE, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied behind GREAT DELIGHT. After this, THE DUKE shifted out to race three wide outside GREAT DELIGHT. At the 700 Metres, ALL THRILLS TOO became unbalanced when awkwardly placed inside the heels of HIDDEN DRAGON. Also at the 700 Metres, SUMMERLAND became unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of ALL THRILLS TOO and GEM OF INDIA. At this time, SUMMERLAND shifted out and caused inconvenience to ANABATIK and NORTHERN GOLD BALL, both of which were hampered and carried wider. SMART WINNER, which was following SUMMERLAND, was also steadied. Prior to straightening, GREAT DELIGHT shifted in and bumped PRIME WITNESS. Near the 200 Metes, MERIDIAN STAR was hit under the jaw by the whip of A Delpech (NORTHERN GOLD BALL). Throughout the race, CAPE OF GOOD HOPE raced wide and without cover. ANABATIK was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ANABATIK after the race did not show any significant findings. HIDDEN DRAGON and SMART WINNER were sent for sampling.
