Racing Incident Report

CLASSA WIN was slow to begin. CHINOOK began awkwardly. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, SUNBELL and WEALTHY TREASURE bumped. After the 1000 Metres, CLASSA WIN was checked to avoid the heels of EVER SUCCESS which was steadied away from the heels of WEALTHY TREASURE. W Smith (HALO KING PRAWN) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position with cover if possible. He said HALO KING PRAWN was slow to begin, then bumped with ENTERTAINING and consequently got well back. He said he therefore elected to try and ensure the horse was covered up at the rear of the field, however, making the first turn HALO KING PRAWN commenced to hang, shifted out and raced wide on the track. He said despite his efforts he was not able to have HALO KING PRAWN shift back across behind runners and in the middle stages the horse almost got beyond him and he had both hands on the right rein trying to get it as close to the rail as possible. The performance of HALO KING PRAWN was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, HALO KING PRAWN will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial around a bend. A Marcus (SURVEYOR) said he had discussed how the horse should be ridden with Mr J Moore, the trainer of the horse, prior to the race. He said it had been decided should SURVEYOR begin well, he should go forward and race in a prominent position, however, it was anticipated there would be a line of horses behind the speed and if SURVEYOR was not showing sufficient speed he should come back and ride the horse with cover if possible to avoid being caught wide. He said SURVEYOR began only fairly, it soon became apparent it was not going to show sufficient speed to clear runners which had drawn to its inside, he therefore elected to steady and come back in the hope of following ENTERTAINING in the run, however, SILENT PARTNER held the position behind ENTERTAINING and this obliged SURVEYOR to race in a three wide position behind FIGHTING MASCOT. He said on straightening he shifted SURVEYOR to the outside and the horse responded nicely to his riding. G Mossé (ENTERTAINING) said he had not previously ridden the horse. He said he was instructed to have it in midfield which he was able to do, however, ENTERTAINING over-raced and would not relax for him. He said he became concerned ENTERTAINING would not be in the finish as far out as the 1600 Metres because the horse was not travelling well at that stage. ENTERTAINING was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of ENTERTAINING after the race did not show any significant findings. The Stewards will afford Mr C Fownes, the trainer of ENTERTAINING, an opportunity of explaining the horse's poor performance tonight at the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 7 February 2004. WEALTHY TREASURE and CLASSA WIN were sent for sampling.
