Racing Incident Report

ROUND THE WORLD was withdrawn on 19.2.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter UNIVERSAL CHARGER. After arriving at the Start, A Marcus (KINDRED SPIRITS) expressed concern over the action of the horse during its preliminary. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon and after the necessary consultations was considered suitable to race. Also after arriving at the Start, GOOD FIT, which had kicked a wall in the Parade Ring, was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, GOOD FIT shifted out and bumped GREENMORE. As a result of this, both horses became unbalanced and lost ground. UNIVERSAL CHARGER was slow to begin. From a gate towards the outside, LUCKY SUPERSTAR was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail but near the rear. Near the 1700 Metres, SONGS OF PRAISE was momentarily steadied away from the heels of GREEN IN BLUE which shifted in. Throughout the race, SPECIFIC SORCEROR raced wide and without cover, near the 600 Metres was carried wider by PEAK POWER which shifted to the outside of SONGS OF PRAISE. After the 400 Metres, SONGS OF PRAISE was held up and unable to obtain clear running between GREEN IN BLUE and PEAK POWER. Also after the 400 Metres, UNIVERSAL CHARGER was steadied and shifted to the outside of GOOD FIT. A Delpech (MONZA KING) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 200 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of GREEN IN BLUE, causing that horse to be hampered, carried out and caused crowding on its outside to GOOD FIT which in turn caused crowding on its outside to GREENMORE which as a result lost its rightful running and was checked. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for A Delpech to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 14 March 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Saturday 28 February 2004. When questioned, W Woods (GREEN IN BLUE) said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position and ensure the race was run at a solid tempo. He said GREEN IN BLUE began well, in the early stages of the race THE PIONEER and ELEPHANT DANCE went forward and he anticipated these runners would continue on at a good pace, he therefore steadied and took up a trailing position behind ELEPHANT DANCE. He said in the middle stages in his opinion the pace of the race came off, he did consider shifting to the outside of ELEPHANT DANCE to go forward, however, he felt if he did this, that horse would go too far forward with him and this would be detrimental to his chances. He said the race then developed into a sprint home, his mount was unable to quicken and kept on only one paced. He said because of the manner in which the race was run GREEN IN BLUE might appear disappointing, but he said the horse was not suited by the tempo of the race in the middle stages. When questioned, Mr C H Yip, trainer of THE PIONEER, said he was unable to offer any real explanation for the improved performance of the horse. He said in the past THE PIONEER had shown itself to be best suited when being able to lead unchallenged. He said the instructions were again to lead and when the horse was able to do so without being challenged, it fought on strongly in the Straight. Mr Yip said he had not varied the horse's routine after its recent runs. He said THE PIONEER can be somewhat unpredictable. The explanation submitted by Mr Yip was accepted. SUNNY RIVIERA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. GREEN IN BLUE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of SUNNY RIVIERA and GREEN IN BLUE after the race did not show any significant findings. THE PIONEER and PRIZE WINNER were sent for sampling.
