Racing Incident Report

FLASH HARRY was withdrawn on 4.9.04 on veterinary grounds (lame left hind) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter QI'S PET (B Prebble). Before being allowed to race again, FLASH HARRY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When the gates opened, LUCKY CORDELIA bounded in the air and as a consequence lost ground. KING OF TURBOT was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was crowded for room between FLYING SPRINTER and GLOBE MARK which after beginning awkwardly shifted out. NICKU NICKU began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and lost ground. Shortly after the start, MULTI MILLIONS, which was to be ridden in a rearward position from a gate towards the outside today, was steadied and shifted back to obtain a position closer to the rail. Near the 700 Metres, GLOBE MARK was steadied away from the heels of SALUT BEAUTE. Throughout the race, AFRICAN FOREST and BUDDIES SPIRIT were held wide by FLYING SPRINTER and did not obtain cover. H K Yim (FLYING SPRINTER) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse forward from the start, lead if possible, otherwise sit in 2nd position. He said in addition he was told he should remain racing one horse away from the running rail if possible and to avoid being covered up. He said in accordance with those instructions when FLYING SPRINTER was not showing the speed he expected out of the gates, he shortly after the start pulled the whip in the left hand and slapped the horse down the shoulder to encourage it to go forward. He said the horse then commenced to hang in and shift across to race close to the fence, he therefore changed the whip into the right hand and again hit the horse on a number of occasions to continue its forward momentum and to have it shift away from the rail into a one off position. He said despite having made use of FLYING SPRINTER in the early stages, he was of the opinion he had to ride the horse in this manner to carry out what he believed to be rather explicit instructions. Mr T W Leung, the trainer of FLYING SPRINTER, confirmed the instructions issued to H K Yim. He explained his preferred position was to race one horse off the fence outside another runner in the lead as he was concerned if racing on the fence and was covered by another horse, FLYING SPRINTER would be reluctant to hold its position. He said in the circumstances he was satisfied with the manner in which H K Yim had ridden the horse. NICKU NICKU was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of NICKU NICKU after the race did not show any significant findings. FLYING SPRINTER, WINNING PARADE and MULTI MILLIONS were sent for sampling.
