Racing Incident Report

CLASSA WIN was slow to begin. WHATABOB was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between MODERN PROSPECT and BETTER BOY which shifted in slightly. At the 1200 Metres, STRATEGIC SELECT was steadied away from the heels of VROOM VROOM. KINGFIELD, which was following STRATEGIC SELECT, was steadied in consequence which caused WHATABOB which was following to be checked. Also at the 1200 Metres, CHINSOLA, which was racing in blinkers for the first time tonight, proved difficult to settle and was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of TIRAMISU. After this, CHINSOLA shifted out and raced wide without cover. At the 800 Metres, WHATABOB was steadied away from the heels of KINGFIELD. On straightening, WHATABOB was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of VROOM VROOM which was giving ground. The performance of VROOM VROOM, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, VROOM VROOM will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. Just before the winning post, WHATABOB, which was closing the race off strongly, was unable to obtain clear running between ASSET PLAY and CZAR OF PRUSSIA. Because of this, WHATABOB was not ridden out right to the winning post. In the Straight, SMART HORSE hung out. Y T Cheng (STRATEGIC SELECT) said in recent starts the horse had been slow to begin and as a consequence raced well back. He said last Monday morning he rode STRATEGIC SELECT in a 1800 Metre turf gallop out of the gates which was used to try and ensure the horse would begin well. He said tonight he was asked to do his utmost to ensure STRATEGIC SELECT began well, then ride along and obtain a forward position if possible. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of STRATEGIC SELECT, confirmed the riding instructions and said he was concerned the horse was becoming an unreliable beginner which in his opinion was jeopardising the horse's chances in races. He said because of this he jumped the horse from the barriers during track work on Monday morning in an attempt to have it begin well. Mr Yip said because STRATEGIC SELECT is so unreliable at the start, he was unsure if the horse would race in a more forward position tonight, but now his intention will be to have the horse ridden in a similar position in its future starts providing it begins satisfactorily. F Coetzee (BETTER BOY), which was having its first start on the All Weather surface tonight, explained he had discussed tactics for tonight's race with the horse's trainer, Mr A S Cruz. He said it was decided that as with the majority of stable runners BETTER BOY which usually races behind midfield should be allowed to roll along and race where it was comfortable. He said he was told not to sit against the horse to have it race behind midfield. He said BETTER BOY began well, he rode along in the early stages and raced for some distance three wide and without cover. He said after entering the Back Straight it became apparent to him that the pace of the race was steady, he therefore allowed BETTER BOY to travel forward and race outside the leader to avoid racing unnecessarily wide. He said in the Straight BETTER BOY may have appeared to close the race off fairly, but in his opinion the winner was actually coming back to him. ASSET PLAY and BETTER BOY were sent for sampling.
