Racing Incident Report

As Y Lerner, the declared rider of GIFT, was found to be overweight, the Stewards permitted W M Lai to be substituted. For accepting this ride and subsequently being found to be overweight, Y Lerner was fined $4,000 [Rule 88(5)]. After arriving at the Start, it was noted both front plates on HIMALAYA had shifted. These plates were re-set. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. TOM'S FIRST and HIMALAYA were slow to begin. Near the 800 Metres, LUCKY PARADISE was steadied away from the heels of SUPER BROSE. At the same time, LIBERAL'S CHOICE, which had been inclined to lay in, was also steadied away from the heels of SUPER BROSE. SUPER BROSE, which came under pressure, made the Home Turn awkwardly and shifted out. For some distance after the 400 Metres, PACKING ANGEL was held up and unable to improve behind CLASSIC MASTER and inside the heels of SUMMERLAND. TOM'S FIRST, which was following PACKING ANGEL, was steadied and shifted to the inside of that horse. Near the 200 Metres, LUCKY PARADISE was awkwardly placed outside the heels of PACKING ANGEL when that horse shifted to the outside of SUMMERLAND into clear running. G Mossé (NATIVE DREAM) said the horse travelled only fairly throughout the run. He said after straightening when placed under pressure NATIVE DREAM responded for a short distance, however, it did not stride out as he thought it should. He said NATIVE DREAM has a history of leg problems and in his opinion the horse was not suited by today's track conditions. He said he did not ride NATIVE DREAM out over about the final 100 Metres because the horse's head came up and the manner in which it was striding out clearly indicated it was not comfortable. NATIVE DREAM was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of NATIVE DREAM after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, NATIVE DREAM will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUMMERLAND and PACKING ANGEL were sent for sampling. An inquiry into the running and riding of SIROCCO (Apprentice H W Lai) was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
