Racing Incident Report

The bell which signifies the start of the race and is usually sounded automatically when the start is effected failed to activate due to a mechanical problem. This bell was manually activated after the field had travelled a short distance. On jumping, CALIFORNIA PRINCE bounded in the air and then began awkwardly. AWARD was slow to begin and then despite being hard ridden was slow to muster speed. Near the 900 Metres, DRAGON AND GOLD became unbalanced. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, CALIFORNIA PRINCE, which was proving difficult to settle, became unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CANNONISE. For some distance after this, CALIFORNIA PRINCE continued to prove difficult to settle, improved inside the heels of CANNONISE and in doing so caused crowding on its inside to DRAGON AND GOLD. In the middle stages, SHERIFF BAMBOO, which had been racing wide and without cover, hung out and near the 700 Metres shifted wider away from AWESOME EAGLE which at this time shifted out away from the heels of SUCCESSOR. Near the 300 Metres, DRAGON AND GOLD became unbalanced and shifted out. For some distance after the 200 Metres, PROPELLOR was steadied when crowded for room between AWESOME EAGLE and SHERIFF BAMBOO which when giving ground shifted out. C Brown (CANNONISE), 3rd placegetter, was reminded of his responsibilities to ensure he rides his mounts out at least hands and heels right to the winning post. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (SOUNDS BEST) said he had been instructed to ride the horse where it felt comfortable as it was today racing first up from a long spell. He did say he had been advised not to make too much use of the horse early in an attempt to ensure it closed today's race off. He said SOUNDS BEST began only fairly, he then allowed the horse to travel at its own speed and as a consequence of the pace of the race in the early stages near the 800 Metres he took up a position with cover behind ROYAL DECREE near the rear of the field. He said SOUNDS BEST travelled a little greenly and did not feel completely comfortable when facing the kickback. He said after the 500 Metres he maintained his position behind ROYAL DECREE despite there being an opportunity to improve on the inside of that horse. He said he did this to ensure he would be able to shift SOUNDS BEST to the outside and obtain uninterrupted running in the Home Straight. He said after the 400 Metres he placed SOUNDS BEST under pressure and as the horse began to respond he then near the 300 Metres shifted it to the outside of ROYAL DECREE after that horse had initially shifted out in front of him. He said when in the clear he rode SOUNDS BEST out and the horse closed the race off nicely. Mr J Moore, trainer of SOUNDS BEST, confirmed the instructions issued to E Saint-Martin. He said he was concerned if SOUNDS BEST had been ridden into a forward position at its first race start in almost 12 months the horse would not be able to finish the race off. He said in future where SOUNDS BEST travels in the run will depend on the tempo of the race, however, in the immediate future the horse will not be ridden along to obtain a forward position but rather be allowed to travel where it is comfortable. Mr Moore expressed his satisfaction with the manner in which SOUNDS BEST had been ridden. E Saint-Martin was advised in the circumstances his explanation would be reported, however, he should ensure that he at all times rides his mounts in a manner which is not open to query. Mr Moore was similarly told he should ensure horses trained by him are ridden in a manner which is not open to query. SHERIFF BAMBOO was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHERIFF BAMBOO after the race did not show any significant findings. BRAINS TRUST and DRAGON AND GOLD were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 30 May 2005)
SHERIFF BAMBOO, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. SHERIFF BAMBOO was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer A S Cruz this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to have an inflammation of the right fore suspensory ligament. Before being allowed to race again, SHERIFF BAMBOO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
