Racing Incident Report

During the preliminary, C Brown was dislodged from ALL CHANCES. C Brown quickly recaptured ALL CHANCES which after arriving at the Start was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. FASTER FASTER was slow to begin, then shortly afterwards blundered and was steadied away from the heels of AFRICAN FOREST which on jumping got its head on the side and shifted out. Shortly after the start, MODERN INTEREST and CAN OPENER bumped. Near the 800 Metres, TELECOM PRINCESS was steadied when awkwardly placed between ALL'S WELL and ALL CHANCES, both of which shifted ground. At the 600 Metres, GREEN WARRIOR was steadied away from the heels of WONDERFUL BLESSING. MODERN INTEREST, which was following GREEN WARRIOR, was steadied in consequence. For the major part of the race, WONDERFUL BLESSING and JIANG JUN hung out. When questioned regarding the poor performance of CAN OPENER, E Saint-Martin said he had ridden the horse in a barrier trial leading into today's race and in his opinion the horse performed satisfactorily. He said today he had been instructed if possible to obtain cover on CAN OPENER and allow the horse to finish the race off. He said when parading behind the barrier CAN OPENER was fractious and sweated up, then on jumping began awkwardly and lost some ground. He said in the early stages he endeavoured to obtain a position behind GREEN WARRIOR and near the 800 Metres when restraining in an attempt to do so CAN OPENER became unbalanced and got its head up. He said after this CAN OPENER travelled only fairly and when placed under pressure before the 400 Metres failed to respond to his riding. He said in his opinion CAN OPENER raced like a horse which would appreciate a distance of further than the 1000 Metres of today's race. CAN OPENER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CAN OPENER after the race did not show any significant findings. ALL'S WELL and JIANG JUN were sent for sampling.
