Racing Incident Report

GREAT LEADER began awkwardly, bumped the outside gate of its stall and as a consequence lost ground. As the gates opened, TREASURE RAIDERS bounded in the air and bumped the inside gate of its stall. ABLE ONE and BEST LUCK began awkwardly. In the early stages, ABLE ONE raced very greenly, proved difficult to control, on a number of occasions got its head up when close to the heels of CHINA SPORTFIELD, then near the 1000 Metres shifted in and caused some crowding to BEST LUCK. Near the 700 Metres, CARRIZO CREEK was checked when crowded for room between WINNING REWARD and SPARKLING STAR which shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ABLE ONE which shifted in after becoming unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHINA SPORTFIELD. No action was taken. For some distance after this, CHINA SPORTFIELD raced ungenerously when close to the heels of KA KA SMART which at this time was commencing to give ground. At the 500 Metres, SPARKLING STAR was steadied away from the heels of CHINA SPORTFIELD. In the Straight, TREASURE RAIDERS hung in. Throughout the race, SUDDEN SPLENDOR travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, D Whyte (PEARL OF INDIA) said after the 150 Metres he looked to his outside on two occasions to see which horses were making ground as in his opinion the run of PEARL OF INDIA had ended and he wanted to ensure he was able to obtain the best possible placing. C Soumillon (WINNING REWARD) said prior to the race he had been told WINNING REWARD had not been closing its races off as hoped when it had raced in a forward position from favourable barriers recently. He said therefore tonight from a wide barrier he had been instructed to obtain a position with cover in about midfield if possible. He said WINNING REWARD began well, he immediately looked for a position with cover, however, SUDDEN SPLENDOR which had drawn to his inside came back with him and held him wide on the track. He said because of this he came back to a position behind SUDDEN SPLENDOR and then LIFELINE RAPIDE, however, raced further back than was intended. Mr K W Lui, trainer of WINNING REWARD, confirmed the instructions issued and the reason for the variation in those instructions from the horse's recent starts. Mr Lui was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to notify Stewards of such changes. TREASURE RAIDERS was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TREASURE RAIDERS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, TREASURE RAIDERS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. WINNING REWARD, SPARKLING STAR and ABLE ONE were sent for sampling.
