Racing Incident Report

WILLIE DETROY was slow to begin. Despite being ridden along in the early stages, VERY FIT failed to muster speed. At the 1000 Metres, SILVER SUN got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of SUNNY SING. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, HELLO PRETTY was checked severely and shifted out abruptly to avoid the heels of SHARKI which itself was checked when racing tight inside HAPPEE OWNER and close to the heels of SAVUTE (A Delpech) which at this time steadied the pace of the race. When HELLO PRETTY checked, it struck the heels of HAIL THE STORM. A Delpech was told where possible to ensure the tempo of races does not steady unnecessarily. At the 400 Metres, WILLIE DETROY endeavoured to shift to the outside of HELLO PRETTY to obtain clear running. When being shifted out, WILLIE DETROY made contact with SUNNY SING which was ridden along to hold its line. As a consequence, WILLIE DETROY was disappointed for running. No action was taken. When questioned, Mr C Fownes, trainer of SAVUTE, said the horse which was having its 4th run since joining his stable and was stepping up to 1600 Metres in distance today had been disappointing since its arrival in Hong Kong. He said because of this from a more favourable barrier draw he instructed A Delpech to go forward and even lead if possible. He said it was anticipated VERY FIT would endeavour to lead and he should sit outside that horse if unable to lead. Mr Fownes said in his opinion the sectional times of the race showed it to be run on about par for this class and distance and despite SAVUTE leading, he did not believe too much use was made of it to do so. He did say the performance of SAVUTE today again disappointed him and it is now his intention to give the horse a short break. He said from a favourable barrier in a suitable race, he would intend to have the horse ridden forward in the future. WILLIE DETROY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of WILLIE DETROY after the race did not show any significant findings. SUNNY SING and HAIL THE STORM were sent for sampling.
