Racing Incident Report

COMPANION began awkwardly and bounded in the air. GLORY YEARS, HONEST TREASURE and THUNDER STORM were slow to begin. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, GRASS HOPPER bumped the running rail, became unbalanced and lost ground when crowded for room inside SOUTH CHINA NINETY which at this time got its head on the side and shifted in away from the heels of HEALTHY which shifted in when barely clear. THUNDER STORM, GOLDEN STRIDE, GLORY YEARS and MAGNIFICENT HORSE, which were following, were checked in consequence. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Near the 200 Metres, MAGNIFICENT HORSE was carried wider by GOLDEN STRIDE which at this time shifted out. After the 200 Metres and again after the 100 Metres, GLORY YEARS got its head on the side, shifted in and made contact with THUNDER STORM. Throughout the race, COMPANION travelled wide and without cover and making the Home Turn was carried wider by DANSING FUN which at this time hung out. S Dye (GRASS HOPPER) explained when the gates opened, his mount bounded in the air and as a consequence lost ground at the start. He said because of this he then had to make use of GRASS HOPPER to obtain a forward position behind GOLDEN FARM. He said making the turn at the 600 Metres GRASS HOPPER became unbalanced and lost ground, then afterwards travelled only fairly and failed to finish the race off. He was unable to offer an explanation for the poor performance of GRASS HOPPER. GRASS HOPPER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of GRASS HOPPER after the race did not show any significant findings. C Soumillon (HONEST TREASURE), which was dropping back in distance tonight from 1400 Metres and was also having its first race start at Happy Valley, said he endeavoured to go forward in the early stages, however, the horse did not show sufficient pace to do so and as a consequence raced at the rear. He said in the early stages HONEST TREASURE hung in and because of this near the 700 Metres he changed the whip into his right hand and hit the horse on two occasions in an attempt to have it race more truly. He said making the Home Turn HONEST TREASURE continued to hang in, became unbalanced when racing inside STAR PRODIGY and lost further ground. He said in the Straight HONEST TREASURE did not respond to his riding. HONEST TREASURE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HONEST TREASURE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying an irregular heart beat. Before being permitted to race again, HONEST TREASURE will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. THUNDER STORM and GLORY YEARS were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported STAR PRODIGY had lost its right front plate.
