Racing Incident Report

During the preliminary near the 1300 Metres, the left stirrup leather of W M Lai, the rider of SAFETY FIRST, detached from the saddle. This caused W M Lai to be dislodged. SAFETY FIRST worked around 500 metres before being recaptured. The horse was then reluctant to return to the Start and it was noted had lost the left front plate and the right hind plate. To avoid an unreasonable delay, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of SAFETY FIRST. Before being allowed to race again, SAFETY FIRST will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. On jumping, NEW COMMAND and LA SCALA bumped. Making the turn at the 800 Metres and in the middle stages, ISLAND SPEED hung out badly. Shortly after the 800 Metres, GREAT PERFORMANCE broke down and was eased out of the race. At the 600 Metres, LA SCALA was checked when awkwardly placed inside the heels of NEW COMMAND (M W Leung) which got its head on the side and shifted in slightly. M W Leung was advised to exercise greater care. At the 400 Metres, CHEEKY LAD was shifted out in an endeavour to find clear running, then at the 200 Metres was steadied when disappointed for running between SUPER GOAL MASTER and ACCELERATOR. Over the concluding stages, POWERKIE improved close to the heels of SUPER GOAL MASTER and ISLAND SPEED. Because of this, POWERKIE was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. In the Straight, MODESTY hung in. MONEY MAN and MODESTY were sent for sampling. After returning to its stable, POWERKIE was noted to be lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, POWERKIE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
