Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, D Whyte, the rider of FINANCIAL KID, expressed concern over the horse's action during the preliminary. FINANCIAL KID was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion the horse had a restricted action in front and was not suitable to race Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of FINANCIAL KID. Before being allowed to race again, FINANCIAL KID will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When being boxed, the cheekers fitted to the bridle of UNIVERSAL PIONEER broke. The Stewards directed that the cheekers be removed and the horse raced without that piece of equipment fitted to the bridle. AS YOU WISH bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. At the 1200 Metres, SUPER FANTASY was checked when crowded for room between AS YOU WISH which shifted out and DEVON FLAIR which shifted in. No action was taken. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, MULTIMIGHTY hung out and lost ground. After the 800 Metres, SUPER FANTASY was steadied away from the heels of AS YOU WISH. LUCKY GUYS, which was following, was steadied in consequence. At the 600 Metres, MULTIMIGHTY was checked severely when crowded for room inside AS YOU WISH which at this time was steadied and carried in by DEVON FLAIR (M Odendaal) which shifted ground when not clear. When MULTIMIGHTY checked, HAPPY CONTENDER and LUCKY GUYS, which were following, were checked in consequence. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed it was appropriate for M Odendaal to be severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. For some distance after the 400 Metres, SUPER FANTASY was held up and unable to improve between OPERA MAGIC and CAN OPENER. After the 300 Metres, LUCKY GUYS was steadied when unable to improve between UNIVERSAL PIONEER and DEVON FLAIR. For some distance passing the 200 Metres, LUCKY GUYS was again steadied when unable to obtain clear running between UNIVERSAL PIONEER and DEVON FLAIR. After this, LUCKY GUYS was shifted out. At the 100 Metres, UNIVERSAL PIONEER got its head on the side, shifted in and as a consequence was momentarily steadied. For the major part of the race, OPERA MAGIC travelled wide and without cover. R Fradd (CAN OPENER) explained the horse's disappointing performance was due to it proving difficult to settle in the early stages. He said CAN OPENER did not relax and consequently was not able to finish the race off. CAN OPENER was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, CAN OPENER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, CAN OPENER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUPER FANTASY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SUPER FANTASY after the race did not show any significant findings. FIRST KNIGHT and LUCKY GUYS were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 18 September 2006)
CAN OPENER, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. CAN OPENER was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer D J Hall this morning. He said he noted the horse to be lame in the left hind leg. As previously advised, CAN OPENER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
