Racing Incident Report

WEALTHY began awkwardly and lost ground. Near the 300 Metres, DR WELL was steadied to avoid the heels of WEALTHY (Apprentice H W Lai) which shifted in when not clear. Apprentice Lai was reprimanded. Approaching and passing the 300 Metres, FIRST AMONG EQUALS was steadied when unable to obtain clear running. Close to the line, GOOD BA BA was steadied and shifted out when close to the heels of HAWKES BAY. Throughout the race, NILOMETER travelled wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. When questioned, B Prebble (DR WELL) said it was anticipated the horse would be beaten for early speed. He said because of this it was intended to have the horse ridden somewhere about midfield with cover in the hope it would close the race off. He said DR WELL showed speed at the start and in accordance with his instructions he gradually took DR WELL back in the field. He said the pace of the race was not as quick as he had anticipated and a number of runners remained bunched in midfield, he therefore to avoid being caught wide took DR WELL back further in the hope of ensuring it had cover. He said after the 1200 Metres he believed he would have had to allow his mount to stride along to maintain a position behind RICE FIELD, he was concerned had he done so DR WELL would have commenced to over-race. He said because of this DANEHILL EXPRESS was able to shift in front of him. He said after the 800 Metres he was left racing without cover further back than intended and as he endeavoured to improve his position on the outside of DANEHILL EXPRESS rounding the Home Turn, he was carried wider by that horse. He said in the Straight DR WELL kept on only one-paced. B Prebble conceded his ride on DR WELL was not one of his better ones. He was advised his explanation would be reported. DANEHILL EXPRESS and ORIENTAL MAGIC were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DANEHILL EXPRESS and ORIENTAL MAGIC after the race did not show any significant findings. GOOD BA BA, SIR ERNESTO and HAWKES BAY were sent for sampling.
