Racing Incident Report

Mr A S Cruz, trainer of BULLISH CASH, was fined $2,000 for failing to declare B Prebble would be 2 lb overweight at the time of declarations. When entering the track, SYDNEY OWNER made contact with a rail. After arriving at the Start, SYDNEY OWNER was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. On jumping, GOOD NATURE was crowded for room between BULLISH CASH and WINNING REWARD which was carried in by GALLANT LION. CONGRATS and MEDICO were slow to begin. In the early stages, GALLANT LION proved difficult to settle. Near the 1300 Metres, MEDICO was steadied to avoid the heels of LUCKY BABY (E Saint-Martin) which when proving difficult to settle shifted in when not quite clear. E Saint-Martin was advised to exercise care. After the 1000 Metres, CHEEKY, which was commencing to over-race, steadied away from the heels of GALLANT LION, shifted out and made contact with MEDICO. At the 500 Metres, GALLANT LION was checked when crowded for room between LUCKY BABY which was giving ground and GOOD NATURE (D Nikolic) which shifted out. Whilst the Stewards were satisfied LUCKY BABY did have a bearing on the incident, they nonetheless severely reprimanded D Nikolic and advised him to exercise greater care. Near the 300 Metres, CHEEKY was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of LUCKY BABY which was giving ground. Also near the 300 Metres, WINNING REWARD was bumped by CLEAN SWEEP which at this time shifted to the outside of SYDNEY OWNER into clear running. M Nunes (MEDICO) said the intention was to ride the horse in about midfield with cover if possible. He said after being inconvenienced near the 1300 Metres, he then took MEDICO further back in an endeavour to obtain a position with cover. He said making the turn at the 800 Metres MEDICO was hampered and carried wider by CHEEKY which was proving difficult to control. He said he allowed CHEEKY to progress forward of him into the Home Straight and switched to the inside where MEDICO closed the race off nicely. E Saint-Martin said the intention was to ride the horse which was racing over 1600 Metres for the first time today with some cover. He said LUCKY BABY proved very difficult to settle, because of this did not in his opinion breathe properly, was left racing without cover and as a consequence did not finish the race off. LUCKY BABY was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, LUCKY BABY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea and a continuous displacement of the soft palate. GOOD NATURE and BULLISH CASH were sent for sampling.
