Racing Incident Report

HURRICANE WAY bounded in the air at the start and lost ground. NOBLE BOSS and EVER KING were slow to begin. CHARMING SPEEDY began awkwardly. In the early stages, when being steadied to shift across behind runners, COP HILL LAD got its head up. However, COP HILL LAD, which proved difficult to settle, was then left racing wide and without cover after the 1400 Metres. Also in the early stages, EVER KING proved difficult to settle, near the 1400 Metres and again after the 900 Metres got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of CAPTAIN BUNNY. In the middle stages, TELECOM TYCOON travelled wide and without cover. On straightening, FEBURO was steadied and shifted out from behind TELECOM TYCOON. At the 250 Metres, HURRICANE WAY was steadied when improving into a narrow run on the inside of DEFLECT which shifted in slightly while hanging. Also at the 250 Metres, CHARMING SPEEDY was steadied and shifted out when disappointed for running between SABRE AND GOLD and CAPTAIN BUNNY. C K Tong (DEFLECT) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of HURRICANE WAY, causing that horse to be crowded for room, strike the running rail, become unbalanced and lose its rightful running. C K Tong was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Tuesday 10 April 2007 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Saturday 31 March 2007. In addition, C K Tong was fined $10,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating one further raceday. Apprentice K L Chui (EVER KING), second placegetter, explained he felt he had won the race and therefore made a celebratory gesture after passing the winning post. Apprentice Chui was told it was not in his best interest to make such a gesture unless he was certain that he had won the race. C K Tong was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said DEFLECT travelled only fairly throughout the race and failed to respond to his riding in the Straight. G Mossé (SABRE AND GOLD) explained the intention had been to ride the horse in a rearward position as is usual. He said however with SABRE AND GOLD stepping up in distance to 1800 Metres today, the horse after beginning well from a wide barrier immediately commenced to over-race. He said when he was not able to obtain a position with cover, SABRE AND GOLD pulled its way into a forward position. He said because SABRE AND GOLD would not relax for him, the horse was disappointing in the manner in which it closed the race off. SABRE AND GOLD was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. DEFLECT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SABRE AND GOLD and DEFLECT after the race did not show any significant findings. FIGS and EVER KING were sent for sampling.
