Racing Incident Report

UNITED EFFORTS was withdrawn on raceday morning by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore). Before being allowed to race again, UNITED EFFORTS will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After being saddled, the assistant trainer to Mr A S Cruz, trainer of FOKINE, expressed concern about the horse's hindlimb action. The horse was trotted up and examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. SIKANDER began awkwardly and lost ground. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, SIKANDER became unbalanced when bumped by FIRM OFFER. At the 1300 Metres, PRETTY TRIO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GREAT ACHIEVEMENT which steadied after crossing to the fence in the lead. Making the turn after the 1300 Metres, NOBLE MAN got its head on the side, hung out and was checked away from the heels of SOUNDS BEST. At the 1200 Metres, PRETTY TRIO got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of GREAT ACHIEVEMENT which at this time was racing tight inside FOKINE. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, GOOD NATURE hung out. For the major part of the race, FOKINE travelled wide and without cover. Apprentice C W Wong (WINNING REWARD) said from the outside barrier he had been instructed to find the fence on the horse which obliged him to take it across behind runners in the early stages of the race. He said WINNING REWARD began well, he immediately restrained his mount and commenced to shift across behind runners. He said he rode WINNING REWARD along after crossing to the fence, however, the horse failed to respond to his riding and soon became detached. He said he allowed WINNING REWARD to become balanced and travel comfortably along the Back Straight, then at the 700 Metres commenced to ride his mount along. He said WINNING REWARD initially did not respond, however, after entering the Home Straight when being ridden out closed the race off strongly. Apprentice K T Yeung (FOKINE) explained he was not able to obtain a position with cover. He said FOKINE travelled satisfactorily until making the turn near the 600 Metres, however, failed to respond to his riding from that point onwards and in the Straight gave ground quickly. He said whilst travelling without cover did not assist the horse, he believed the manner in which it was striding indicated to him it would be better suited racing on a more forgiving track surface. FOKINE and GOOD NATURE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FOKINE and GOOD NATURE after the race did not show any significant findings. GREAT ACHIEVEMENT and SOUNDS BEST were sent for sampling.
