Racing Incident Report

SILVERBIRD was withdrawn on 17.5.08 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (inappetance). Before being allowed to race again, SILVERBIRD will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. HEADINGLEY began awkwardly, then lost ground when crowded by GRAND GENERAL which shifted in after being bumped by TELECOM EMPEROR. CHEERFUL HAPPINESS began awkwardly. From a wide barrier, in the early stages, LUCKY WORLD was taken back. After the 1200 Metres, CHARMING MONKEYS got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of NOT QUITE PERFECT which shifted in when barely clear. Near the 1100 Metres, HEADINGLEY was steadied away from the heels of ELEPHANT STAR. HEADINGLEY made the turn at the 800 Metres awkwardly, was then checked to avoid the heels of ELEPHANT STAR which itself was steadied away from the heels of TELECOM EMPEROR which in turn was steadied away from the heels of GRAND GENERAL. No action was taken. For the major part of the race, CHARMING MONKEYS hung out, particularly making the turn after the 800 Metres. Before being allowed to race again, CHARMING MONKEYS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial around a bend. After the 800 Metres, CHEERFUL HAPPINESS, which was being shifted wider on the track, was steadied away from the heels of HEADINGLEY. Making the Home Turn, MULTI-WIN SPIRIT raced tight between SPICY HOT and TELECOM EMPEROR which at this time shifted out to obtain clear running. In the Straight, LUCKY WORLD hung in and proved difficult to ride. The performance of SUN AWESOME, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SUN AWESOME will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. W M Lai (ELEPHANT STAR) explained after the 1200 Metres his mount as it had done in the past raced greenly and would not maintain its position behind GRAND GENERAL and inside TELECOM EMPEROR. He said for some distance after this ELEPHANT STAR continued to race greenly and in his opinion may be better suited racing in blinkers. When questioned regarding the improved performance of GRAND GENERAL, Trainer B K Ng said the horse at its most recent start which was over 1000 Metres at Happy Valley closed the race off strongly after being checked at the start. He said following that race M Du Plessis who rode the horse recommended to him that the horse be stepped up in distance. He said because of this he entered GRAND GENERAL for today’s race over 1400 Metres. He said because of the increase in distance and the clean start GRAND GENERAL was able to travel in a position behind the lead. He did say the work of GRAND GENERAL had been good in the lead up to today’s race. He said he engaged C W Wong to ride GRAND GENERAL today after M Du Plessis trialed the stablemate CHARMING MONKEYS which was also engaged in this race and he elected to ride that horse. Apprentice K T Yeung (HEADINGLEY) explained after being interfered with at the start the horse travelled near the rear. He said then in what was a slowly run race HEADINGLEY raced keenly and as a consequence did not close the race off. When questioned regarding the poor performance of CHEERFUL HAPPINESS, H W Lai said his mount despite being ridden along in the early stages did not show sufficient speed to travel in midfield as anticipated. He said at no stage of the race did CHEERFUL HAPPINESS travel strongly and failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure in the Straight. HEADINGLEY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. CHEERFUL HAPPINESS and MULTI-WIN SPIRIT were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HEADINGLEY and CHEERFUL HAPPINESS after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, MULTI-WIN SPIRIT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had sustained an abrasion to its left front cannon. SHINING DRAGON and GRAND GENERAL were sent for sampling.
