Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, M Du Plessis, the rider of MEGA BULLET, expressed concern over the action of the horse. MEGA BULLET was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. QUALITY-QUALITY began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted in and bumped MEGA BULLET. KAISER’S CHOIX began awkwardly and then despite being ridden along was slow to muster speed. Near the 1200 Metres, HAPPY MASTER, which was left racing wide and without cover, was allowed to stride forward. Also near the 1200 Metres, FLORAL PICASSO was steadied away from the heels of MISSION and MEGA BULLET was steadied away from the heels of KAISER’S CHOIX which in turn was steadied away from the heels of SUNSHINE BOY. At the 250 Metres, HAPPY MASTER, which was drifting in, was steadied away from the heels of MAVERICK which shifted out after being bumped by CARE FREE MIDAS which shifted out after initially being carried in by MAVERICK. SUNSHINE BOY, which was following, was checked away from the heels of HAPPY MASTER. No action was taken. Over about the final 100 Metres, SUNSHINE BOY was not able to obtain clear running and because of this was not ridden out to the end of the race. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner, CARE FREE MIDAS, Trainer Y S Tsui said prior to the horse’s most recent start its performances had been acceptable when not beaten by big margins. He said after CARE FREE MIDAS ran on 15 February 2009, it was noted the horse had sustained an injury to its right front leg and as a consequence the horse was withdrawn from its scheduled race on 18 February 2009 and had an injury enforced freshen up. He said at its most recent start when resuming from this let-up on 15 March 2009, CARE FREE MIDAS began awkwardly from a wide barrier and as a consequence was not able to obtain a forward position as intended. He said on that occasion CARE FREE MIDAS travelled in a rearward position and then after being carried wider making the Home Turn failed to finish the race off. He said the track work of CARE FREE MIDAS subsequent to its most recent start had in his opinion improved noticeably and that the horse had also improved in itself which was indicated by its gain in body weight. He said he had not altered the feeding pattern of CARE FREE MIDAS between runs. He added in the past CARE FREE MIDAS had sweated up noticeably prior to its races in the Parade Ring, however tonight the horse appeared far more relaxed and consequently paraded well prior to the race. He said CARE FREE MIDAS was expected to run a good race tonight by the stable in view of the improvement it had shown in track work. Mr Tsui was told that now CARE FREE MIDAS has established form, he would be expected to do his utmost to ensure the horse maintains this form. MISSION was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, MISSION was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse had a displacement of the soft palate. KAISER’S CHOIX, CARE FREE MIDAS and HAPPY MASTER were sent for sampling.
