Racing Incident Report

UPSIDE OF ANGER was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, VICTORY MASCOT was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Near the 1800 Metres, ZEPHYRUS was steadied away from the heels of SPIRIT OF LO PAN which itself was steadied to obtain a position behind BATURO. Near the 1600 Metres, SAMBUOYANT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of SURE GAIN (W C Marwing). W C Marwing reported that at this time he felt that SURE GAIN had been galloped on behind. In the early stages, ANIMATION was steadied to obtain a position with cover behind midfield, however, was caught wide and without cover and near the 1600 Metres was allowed to stride forward to race near the lead. Passing the 700 Metres, SAMBUOYANT, which had its head on the side, was awkwardly placed inside the heels of UPSIDE OF ANGER. Shortly after entering the Straight, UPSIDE OF ANGER was steadied and altered course to the inside of FANTASTIC GUY (B Doyle) when disappointed for running between SPIRIT OF LO PAN and FANTASTIC GUY which shifted out. B Doyle was reprimanded and advised to ensure he is sufficiently clear when shifting ground in similar circumstances. In the Straight, FOREST FOUNTAIN hung in and then near the 150 Metres hung in across the heels of VISIONARIO and was checked. When questioned, W C Marwing stated that as SURE GAIN is a one-paced horse, he had been instructed to lead on the horse if possible, if not, to take up a position behind the leaders. He said he rode SURE GAIN along in the early stages, however, the horse did not muster speed and consequently raced further back in the field than had been anticipated. He said although the tempo of the race was fair in the middle stages, he was of the belief that SURE GAIN would be left flat-footed when the field sprinted. He said for this reason he elected to shift out and improve his position at the 900 Metres. He said he felt that it was in SURE GAIN’S best interests for the horse to be ridden this way as it has previously demonstrated that it does not show a turn of foot. Mr C H Yip, the trainer of SURE GAIN, confirmed the instructions issued to W C Marwing. He said that he was satisfied with W C Marwing’s decision to commence improving his position at the 900 Metres as the horse is, in his opinion, a one-paced type. A veterinary inspection of ANIMATION, FOREST FOUNTAIN and SURE GAIN after the race did not show any significant findings. SPINNAKER and BATURO were sent for sampling.
