Racing Incident Report

ROCKET PROUD and FINN MACCOOL were slow to begin. J Lloyd (FINN MACCOOL) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that after the 100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of STAR OF FAME, causing that horse to be checked away from the heels of FINN MACCOOL and become unbalanced. J Lloyd was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday, 13 February 2011 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting on Saturday, 5 February 2011. When questioned, C K Tong stated that in the early stages he rode ASMODAI forward to lead the race if possible. He said approaching the first turn SHAHJEE was racing to his inside and therefore passing the 1000 Metres he rode ASMODAI more vigorously in an attempt to cross that horse. He said however that SHAHJEE continued to maintain its position inside the heels of ASMODAI and rather than continue to ride forward, he elected to sit outside that horse as he did not believe ASMODAI would have been able to finish off the race had it been ridden more vigorously to obtain the lead. When questioned, Apprentice T H So said that he was instructed if possible to lead on SHAHJEE which was having its first race start in Hong Kong today. He said accordingly he rode his mount vigorously out of the barriers in an endeavour to have it take up a forward position, however, it became apparent to him that JADE MOLLY was also being ridden along to maintain its position to the inside of SHAHJEE. He said rather than continue to ride his mount along vigorously to lead, he elected to remain racing outside of JADE MOLLY. He said when ASMODAI improved its position to the outside of SHAHJEE, he elected to steady SHAHJEE to allow that horse to cross, however, SHAHJEE commenced to over-race and he was not able to steady his mount at this time. He said when ASMODAI, which was racing tight to his outside, continued forward, he allowed SHAHJEE to also continue forward in the hope that he may be able to cross JADE MOLLY, however, at that time he received a number of calls from his inside advising that he was not clear to cross and for this reason he remained racing one off the fence. He said he was reluctant to ride SHAHJEE along at this time to cross JADE MOLLY as he had made some use of the horse in the early stages and he felt that if he were to ride SHAHJEE along to cross JADE MOLLY at this time, the horse would not be able to finish off the race. Trainer P F Yiu confirmed that he had instructed Apprentice So to lead on SHAHJEE if possible. He said it had been hoped that SHAHJEE would be able to lead the race and JADE MOLLY, which was also trained by him, would be able to take the position on the rails behind the speed. He said he observed that Apprentice So rode SHAHJEE along in the early stages in an attempt to lead the race, however, the horse had not shown sufficient speed, in his opinion, to do so. Mr Yiu stated that he had given the instructions to both Apprentice So and Jockey H W Lai (JADE MOLLY) in the Parade Ring prior to the race and that he had not discussed with either rider how he intended to have the horses ridden prior to this time. Mr Yiu was advise that his evidence would be reported. Apprentice So was advised that his riding of SHAHJEE in that he failed to make sufficient effort, in the opinion of the Stewards, to lead the race after the 800 Metres had come under notice. He was further advised that he should ride his mounts at all times in such as fashion so as to leave no room for query as to intentions to win or to obtain the best possible place. When questioned, W C Marwing (TAKE THE RAP) stated that at the entrance to the Straight he was following JADE MOLLY and he had hoped to shift to the outside of that horse to obtain clear running. He said however that CITY POWER maintained its position to the outside of TAKE THE RAP and he was therefore not able to shift out at this time. He said he had observed that JADE MOLLY had shifted slightly away from the fence in the early part of the Straight and therefore for some distance near the 300 Metres he remained racing on the back of JADE MOLLY to ascertain whether a run either to the inside or to the outside of that horse would eventuate. He said when CITY POWER continued to maintain its position to the outside of TAKE THE RAP and when JADE MOLLY shifted away further from the fence, he directed TAKE THE RAP to the inside of JADE MOLLY near the 250 Metres to improve his position to the inside of JADE MOLLY. When questioned regarding his riding of ROCKET PROUD in the Straight, G Mossé stated that he had been instructed to lead on the horse, however, it did not show sufficient speed to lead. He said he placed ROCKET PROUD under pressure in the early part of the Straight and the horse responded only fairly to his riding. He said near the 300 Metres he observed STAR OF FAME shifting out to his inside, however, he continued to ride ROCKET PROUD along to maintain its position between that horse and FINN MACCOOL. He added however after the 200 Metres he was obliged to steady ROCKET PROUD away from the heels of FINN MACCOOL which shifted in under pressure. He said after this ROCKET PROUD was not responding to his riding and for this reason he did not ride the horse out vigorously over the concluding stages but continued to slap the horse down the shoulder with the whip in the right hand. G Mossé was reprimanded for his riding of ROCKET PROUD in the Straight, particularly over the final 150 Metres. He was advised that the Stewards had spoken to him on a number of occasions this season regarding the manner in which he had ridden horses out in the Straight and he was placed on notice that any failure to adequately test horses out in the Straight, irrespective of whether the horse is in contention for placing, may find him in breach of the Rules. A veterinary inspection of ROCKET PROUD after the race including an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea and a cut to the inside of its right hind pastern. SOVEREIGN FALCON and TAKE THE RAP were sent for sampling.
