Racing Incident Report
As the start was effected, STRAIGHT GOLD bounded in the air and consequently lost a considerable amount of ground. Before being allowed to race again, STRAIGHT GOLD will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial. NEW GREENFIELD and TALLEY CLOSE bumped at the start. From the outside barrier, WINDBREAKER was taken across behind runners shortly after the start. Near the 700 Metres, CHATER MIKADO shifted out away from the heels of FREDERICK ENGELS which shifted out when awkwardly placed close to the heels of FIRST IN COMMAND. This resulted in TALLEY CLOSE being taken out and BEST ELEVEN being taken wider. Passing the 700 Metres, AMIGO shifted out abruptly when checked away from the heels of NEW GREENFIELD. Also passing the 700 Metres, WINDBREAKER was awkwardly placed close to the heels of STRAIGHT GOLD and in doing so shifted in and brushed the running rail. Passing the 600 Metres, CHATER MIKADO was awkwardly placed close to the heels of ETERNAL BEAUTY. Both LEGENDARY DRAGON and FREDERICK ENGELS lay out under pressure in the Straight. When questioned, M Chadwick stated that he had been instructed to ride BEST ELEVEN where it was comfortable but attempt to find cover, if possible, from barrier 11. He said in the early stages he shifted BEST ELEVEN across behind TALLEY CLOSE in an endeavour to obtain cover behind that horse. He said however that NEW GREENFIELD was ridden to maintain its position on the back of TALLEY CLOSE and this resulted in BEST ELEVEN racing without cover and further back in the field than he had hoped. He added that he did give consideration to steadying BEST ELEVEN to obtain cover behind NEW GREENFIELD, however, he felt that he would have lost too much ground had he have done this. After the race, an endoscopic examination was conducted on TALLEY CLOSE at the request of Trainer A T Millard. The Veterinary Surgeon said this examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Also after the race, W C Marwing reported that CHATER MIKADO coughed on a number of occasions on pulling up after the race. A veterinary inspection of BEST ELEVEN and CHATER MIKADO after the race did not show any significant findings. ARRIVED AHEAD and STRAIGHT GOLD were sent for sampling.
